This all gets complicated, doesn't it....I think D-E drives are great for displacement boats, but the idea gets too complex for planing hulls. The electric motors that you need get pretty heavy as well.

A better idea, although it doesn't do us any good, is to do what MJM is doing-building a boat with better construction techniques so that it is very stiff and seaworthy but light. Then you need less power, and she goes faster and uses less fuel.

Yeah, and then you lose the seakeeping abilities of having a heavy boat. It's all a trade off.
