The official Detroit spec for 2-stroke oil is single weight oil, 30 or 40 pending operating temperatures and an API of CF-2. There is no substitute or emergency duty oil to pour into your Detroit.
Any idiot that poured 15w40 into your 8V71s should be shot, then the survivors sued.
Clutch oil uses the same oil behind a Detroit.
Multi V oil is not good. The API rating required (CF-2) is lacking in other oils (CH-4) and may be damaging lacking the anti foaming and shear properties required for 2 stroke Detroits.

NAPA part number is 75-118 (Fleet 40W, CF-2) for 5 gal pails of proper oil.

I understand trying not to embarrass some folk, But somehow put some signals up to help others avoid this pile - o - dummies.

I really hope they did not pour GL-5 (90w) into your Alison clutch.
If they did, your down for a while flushing all lubes out. File a claim and involve DD/A asap.

Apparently they do good work on bottom paint, but that’s about it.

I noticed a pail of Delo 400 sitting in the cockpit of a friend's v92 powered boat. Asked him why he was using it and not Delo 100. He said no one local carried 100 and the counter guy at a local auto parts store told him 400 was ok to use. Hmm I said, had any engine problems recently? "Yes" he said he'd just replaced two heads with only 2k hours on them. Of course, no proof that the 400 caused the heads to fail, but. It's right in the manuals, the oil specs.

PO left me with Castrol Assuron 40W in the engines. Says CF-2 right on the back. Wallymart $18/G (Not sure if that's in store or on line only)

That was very common about 20 years ago after they changed the specs on the Delo 400. It took years for yards to realize that DD recommended switching to Delo 100

But that’s nothing compared to using 15W40...

I had a survey scheduled on a boat with a pair of 6-71 with Allison Transmissions. Broker called said transmission were not shifting properly so had to put survey on hold. I asked if the boat had a recent oil change, he said it had just been done. You guessed it 15w40 oil was put in. I told them to change it, flush it and put in correct oil. Surprise transmission worked just fine with the proper oil.

Yep...was way off. I need to learn not to mention #s until I check them...and the binder with my receipt was right here on the desk.

I paid exactly $300 for those 3 5gal buckets. That was with some kind of discount. I'm shocked to see the 1 gal of Rotella 10w-40 I bought for the generator was $47.97
With tax, it was $370 for the oil to do a change.

NAPA 75118 is a lot cheaper than that! I think the most I’ve ever paid is around $85 a pail. All the NAPA stores seem to price it a bit differently and the only discount I’ve ever been offered there is AAA….. There filters are also pretty good, just see if they will sell you their 1970 filter in the “pro-pak” without the individual packaging. It’s almost $7 cheaper if there is no cardboard box and just plastic shrink wrap.
