Rare Air Defense Hatteras Variation Spotted off Carolina Coast

The 'C' in 55 stands for clays. Took out a group from my son-in-law's company for some underway gunnery practice.

Mounted a couple of electric throwers on the transom and went about 4 miles off of Charleston and a mile or so south of the ship channel.

In short order they managed to shoot up a case of ammo.

Note the empty shell heading for the camera.

I had along a friend as a dedicated safety officer allowing me to professionally con Aslan providing challenging target presentations. Naturally, we stripped the bunks beforehand because, as everyone knows, mattresses are great for sealing the big holes.

And the winner of the coveted Bolivian Navy's Aerial Gunnery Award.

A good time was had by all...until we motored through a regatta of close to 100 sailboats that found themselves in the channel at low tide. It's a good thing my reverse gears work is all I can say. Learned some new phrases by the way.

Good thing you were out of ammo by then?

Did you know they start those heats with an air horn? I think I started one.

I hope you tore down and cleaned your 1100 afterwards.

And two Super X-1's. That was lots of fun. Think the next trip will involve propane cylinders and AR's.

I had a buddy's son - a US Marine - out on a shark trip last summer south of Block Island. Brought my Remington 1100 and a case of pigeons and a few boxes of shells and a hand trap. Had a ball breaking clays waiting for the sharks to show up. While we were shooting, a sub out of Groton passed by about 3/4 of a mile off our stern. They were well out of range, but you know damn well they knew we were shooting. Needless to say we had a good laugh, but held fire until they were out of sight.

Last time I heard of anyone doing that was off a cruise ship in New Orleans back in the 80's. Gonna have to try that. The only more redneck thing I could do would be to take some tannerite out and let it float in amongst a bunch of sharks before deployment
