Re: Salon heat pump
If you have digital controls you should be getting a code if the system is going off because of high or low pressures.
As stated above you have to have an EPA license to buy refrigerant and yes the license is not that difficult but as also stated you need additional equipment to be "legal" once you attach a set of gauges. Reclaim machine, reclaim bottle, vacuum pump. Also its illegal to vent refrigerant into the atmosphere. Beyond that, just low on gas is fairly easy to correct but as Scott pointed out, you need to find the leak first, especially if its R22. If its more than a simple leak then diagnosis can get tricky. Low pressure does not always just mean low gas and done. BTW, while the odds of getting caught are probably low for violating the EPA laws, the fines can be very high and there is at least one jail sentence that has been handed down. Also there is a reward for turning people in.
Now, with all that said - there are things that a DIY'er can do as has been suggested such as triggers, low voltage etc. One thing that you can also do is make sure that you have really good raw water cooling to all units and good airflow from the outlet vents because either one of these issues can cause freezing/overheating/high or low pressures. Don't ever use acid unless absolutely necessary because you can ruin your heat exchangers and kill the whole system. I have used only pulsing high city water pressure to keep two 2002 era units running at factory pressures since new.
Good luck,
