    Fall Adventure

A friend and I are bringing a 52' Regal from Dysart Marina in Maine, down to Wilmington NC next week. Range is about 320 miles on the boat. Any suggestions for ports to stay in, and places to miss? We'll be running 20-25kts depending on sea conditions.

Is this one of the woody woodpecker looking pod boats?

I hear they don't like rough seas.

It's a unique boat. 52 feet.. 34k lbs, pod drives. We'd like to port every night.

They do lots of repairs and fit outs on them here. Keep close to shore. And bring your waterwings in case ...

Good advice..we lost a transmission in 5 foot seas and limped in to Jonesport Maine. We're stuck here for at least 3 days because if weather/seas. Transmission blew the fill cap, and bathed the ER in gear oil. Refilled and tighted cap, (probably loose from last service). All appears normal now..no alarms ever sounded. Boat should be named The Roly Poly..

at least there’s a ton of room to work in the ER. We have a guy here with one and he loves it. That’s the one we’re the hole deck lifts up and the engines are completely accessible? ER is just forward of the garage?

Dock guy just came by inspecting everybody's lines. We've got about 10 out to cleats on a floating dock, and fixed Spud poles. The harbor is electric with folks pulling boats and securing moorings. They're talking 70mph winds and something called bombogenisis..Google it.. wish us luck!

    Re: Fall Adventure

Final answer... We're trucking her home! Billings really wants nothing to do with IPS drives (although a Volvo dealer).. turned out to be a failure of the upper planetary shaft bearing race. Now that I've seen one apart, they are pretty simple. Kinda like the differential on a car. Drive shaft connects to tranny input shaft and gear. Planetary shaft has upper and lower planetary gears (forward and reverse), upper and lower clutch packs, that look just like a motorcycle clutch disc pack. Hydraulic pressure presses the forward or reverse stack together. In our case, the upper bearing race gave up, allowing the planetary shaft to move away from the input shaft gear. Lower drive unit is full of metal..and the guys here are quite honest, they don't want to purchase the specialty tools to fix it, for 1 transmission... So, they want to replace it with a new one..21k, plus install. So trucking it home where our local Volvo guy says he can fix it..for much, much less..so it has really been a Fall Adventure!

34k #'s- that's the weight of a Hatt 43'...always find the Hatt weight differentials to other brands interesting. Only the hull is primary area of difference, so says something about the Hatt hull content.
