Re: Let the Fun Begin- It's Buying Time

Jack you're correct on the CAT raw water cooled after cooler replacement recommendation interval of 6 years, think the hours interval is at least 3,000 or 5,000, definitely not 1,000 hours.
The 4 cycle MTU's (series 60 and 2,000's) are very solid engines, from what people tell me if you keep up the the recommended service they will treat you very well.

Re: Let the Fun Begin- It's Buying Time

I am just trying to avoid a steep headache on this particular purchase. With an anticipated annual use not to exceed 50 hours, I would really like to choose "wisely" and not run the risk of a 30K service for 50 hours of use. I know there is no way to avoid the unanticipated problems but there has to be a prudent way to avoid the known ones. Sorry to sound like wimp but this is not the boat to generate costly repairs.

Was reading more and more of this thread and I personally would stay away from MANS. Nothing to do with the motors as they run great, It's just the cost to keep is too high for my tastes personally. Now if it was a boat of someone I worked for and they were paying the bills I'd take a MAN boat any day. They are a nice running powerful motor in a small package.

All this being said and the boats you've mentioned I'd look toward the updated 4 stateroom floor plan Hatteras 65C, or a Hatteras 60C.

Food for thought, have you considered a Viking Princess, Fairline, Tiara 53, Maritimo, or Ferretti? You'll have a Pilothouse, and Open Bridge, Possibly a Full Beam Master, Cat or MTU Power, Walkaround Decks, and the ability to occasionally fun fish off the Platform and rear elevated cockpit area.

I'd personally stay with the Hatts but here are a few options you can maybe consider.

While that might not be reflective of the total hours on the mains, that is a lot of hours either way, even if only on the gensets.

Tony - these are all great suggestions and in the end, I may have to go this route if the Admiral prefers these layouts to the Sportfish. Until that happens, I prefer to stay with more of a boat feel than a sports car feel. I also prefer a wide beam boat. With that said, the Maritmo looks interesting but way beyond what I want to spend. I also just put two and two together and realized all the boats down South in the vintage I am looking, generally have at least 2K hours because of the 12 month season. I guess if I could waive a magic wand, I would get a higher hour boat(within reason) that commands a lower price due to the hours but is still reliable enough to give me my 50 hours a year without any major headaches. I guess Detroits don't scare me because after owning 671 TIB's, 692TA's, 892 TA's and 1292 DDEC's, and having overhauled three engines, I kind of understand them. But, my broker down South is really hesitant about two cycle engines for resale reasons. I could care less about resale if the purchase price is right. Does anyone know anything about the 60 Hat GoodIdeas in Destin or the 65 Hat Caddyshack in Tequesta? Sorry, I don't have the links handy.

Full Disclosure I am a satisfied MAN owner. But I am in no way trying to defend the brand. In fact a 60ish Sportfish may be in my future. I would pay a premium for a CAT boat vs a MAN. But I think it is worth mentioning that the 820 hp 10 cyl has a very good reputation. Once you repair the known issues they are very reliable. The 1050s do not have that same good reputation. They are definitely expensive to keep up but if you do that you can have a very reliable power plant. I would encourage anyone not to dismiss an 820 hp MAN boat if they are comfortable spending the money on keeping them up.

The 820Gp MANs are very reliable and efficient engines. They had their problems in the mid 90s but most of not all should have been updated by now. The 1050HP is one to avoid. I wouldn’t touch a boat with them. They’re are plenty out there that failed within the first few years and with 500-1000 hours. Pretty common to see a boat with low hours and one or both engines replaced. I had a friend with a 2004 Viking with the 1050s. He sold the boat right before the warranty expired because of all the issues. Boat had about 500 hours on it when he sold it. The service on the MANs is definitely high cost. I’d opt for Cats or MTUs for the bigger boats.

Sorry that was an error on the hours. I’d agree the MTUs are fantastic engines. Think I’d prefer the 3406, C15 or C18 over the series 60 but the 2000 series would be my choice for high HP. The 16V2000 seems to be just as good if not better in the 2600HP range as it is in the 1800HP range. Just a lot of engine to feed!
