Re: Hurricane ripped off fly bridge

Here are the options for Dos Equis. I've spoken with a few helpful people and I believe in absence of straight bolt-on windows, I will order the original aluminum frame extrusions from Sams Marine and have new ones fabricated either here in Turks and Caicos or in the Dominican Republic. For the 44' the windows have to go on first then roof lowered onto the window frames. Option is do it all here in Turks or build provisional frame and mount roof here then do wielding and andozing in Dominican Republic. Cost and safety will drive the solution. The 48YF that is in NC would have to be a graft...cut entire flybridge and window frames then fiberglass onto my boat. If any one knows of original 44' helm window frames out there please let me know as this would be the most time and cost effective option of all. Thank you

Dos, are you able to figure out what failed that allowed the bridge deck to be blown off in the storm? Have a suggestion for the new window frames, it might be easier to just paint them instead of getting them anodized..
Also, thinking there has to be an easier way to put it back together than the way it was originally constructed.
Somehow prefab and build a kit with all the parts that can be shipped and put together on the boat; instead of parts from here, parts from there, etc.

I hate to say this but with maria having just been bumped to 160mph and heading towards TC, i hope the yard is taking steps to protect the boat and secure the flybridge. Good luck!

    Just an option.

There's a 44 for sale for $49k. I'd think that's what your going to spend trying to get hours fixed and running.

Did you see the giant hardtop above the bridge? It's a wonder it didn't tear off just going down the river. There wasn't a lot of structure supporting the bridge in the first place let alone that big beast stuck up there.

RS, I was thinking about the giant top being an issue. Just can't believe it didn't blow off first, must have been attached better than what it was attached to. This is why I've been hinting that there's probably a better way to put the boat back together than how it was originally built.

Re: Hurricane ripped off fly bridge

There were two point of failure. 1) the starboard blade (big white support at wing door w Hatteras name on it) was very wet and delaminated. I ripped it apart yesterday getting half the wing door and hinge off. Looks like ants or something had eaten the woody gains of wood. Was not termite damage. 2) top hand rail around aft deck let loose. The top wood hand rail around aft deck was held in place w two screws per support. This looked factory original. The hardtop additional was very solid. None of the welds failed. It stayed attached tilll the end so the winds from the Cat 5 hurricane took it all together. Roof, flybridge windows one door and the top rail. I think one or two cargo straps going over entire top and around the hull would have changed the out come of this. Worling w Steve at Samsmarine for supplies.
