Re: Some light reading - The Yacht That vanished
I know that area fairly well. Years ago I lived in Panama City Beach (Bay Point) and made regular crossings of the Gulf from St Andrews Bay or Applichicola to Clearwater or Johns Pass (St Pete). On one of our trips we came upon a large sailing vessel about 70 miles off shore apparently just drifting along with no sign of anyone on board. We tried hailing her with the radio and the hailer but did not attempt to come alongside since the narcotics business was in full bloom at that time and we heard horror stories that it was a trick to take over a local boat that was familiar at it's home port. The nasties would kill off the folks on board, wrap anchor chain around the bodies and throw them over the side. The boat would then be used to ferry their illegal cargo without too much notice. How many of these stories were embellished or totally made up is unknown but it sure made us careful and prepared with a fair compliment of guns of various types on board.

Walt....I posted about this before but your post sent shivers. We were crossing at night from Carabelle to Clearwater with another boat. We passed by a large sailing vessel going in the opposite direction. Both boat
s saw it. We hailed but received no reply. Into view and then gone. Spooky!
