    32' Sport Fisherman: Worth Rebuilding?

http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1983....WLuk7utOKrWSo this boat has been for sale for years. I know it will be a total gut job and a big rebuild, but is it worth it? If I'm not mistaking, it's balsa cored which could be wet from the submersion. Not much info on them and not many for sale. What I have read, they are very capable boats that ride well.

I saw this boat 2 years ago so sad grate day boat. The picks were taken in Hatteras at Scotts Boat yard . The listing indicates Wancheese which may be correct now I did not notice it during my annual visit this year. The owner was paying yard rent OUCH. I feel one or two grand will take it home. It certainly is trailable.
As to balsa cored it has been out of the H2o for a long time. If i wanted it make a 1,300 offer that might help with the yard bill. When i ask about it i was told the owner may do almost anything to stop the cancer.
GOOD LUCK A GRATE BACK YARD PROJECT.

While it may look tempting there is IMO way too much that you would need to do to bring it back to life. By the time you buy new engines (or rebuild those), new electrical (looks like pretty much everything) you may be well over the price of one without that history. And that doesn't include your labor, but I assume you need something to do in your spare time. As has been stated on this forum many times you will get away for a lot less money and labor and time by getting a boat that while seeming more expensive at first would be substantially less money in the end. There are plenty of other "project" boats out there for you to consider that have the basics still in place. As I see it the only thing you will be getting with this boat is a lot of blood, work and tears. Some boats are best left to the crusher.

We had the identical boat to this years ago, I would consider this the best riding and built hatteras of the (3) we have owned. With gas power it was a great running boat. I do not think the hull was cored, just the decks like most hats.

For a boat that went under, surprised to see all of the hatches still in place.
Bring this one back to life!

Yea, it will EASILY be $50k to bring this back to life. I can't imagine these engines could be rebuilt, salt water got into them in 2011 and nothing was ever done. If these boats were selling for $100k, then I guess it could be worth it, but the few I saw were under $45k. I'd love to bring her back, but I think it's too far gone.

Unless you do all the work yourself this one could drain you. I've found guys that try and get so burned out they walk away and get out of boating. Make sure you double the cost of repairs that you see. It's the hidden neglect that you under estimate.

Depends on what you want. Do you want a bare-bones charter boat? Or just something to go out and fish on?

You can pick up a pair of used 5.9 cummins for decent price:

    10k here (sold) http://www.thehulltruth.com/parts-fo...6bts-sold.html
    17k here http://www.thehulltruth.com/parts-fo...smissions.html
    14k here: http://www.thehulltruth.com/parts-fo...10hp-6bts.html
    22k (been for sale a while) http://www.thehulltruth.com/parts-fo...a-cummins.html

Just drop them in and do minimal wiring for engine systems and nav/control.

Or put in gas engines (cheap), but I don't think it's worth it. If you are doing the grunt work, spend the few extra bucks for diesel.

Another option, find a good donor boat (craiglist is your friend) and rob it.

It makes no sense for making a family or nice boat, but it could make sense for a I dont give a damn fishing/charter machine.

I was browsing CL for donor boat, but the only ones I see have Volvos in them. Don't hear too much good about them.My plan was to make it a don't give a damn family fishing boat. Make it look respectful, but not necessarily have a high end fit and finish. Putting a bracket and twin 250+ outboards crossed my mind, but by the time I do that, I'd be right there at the cost of diesel.

Come get my 32' SF for a song. Pristine and well maintained.
Drive it home and save yourself the aggravation.

It's always cheaper to buy one that already runs and floats.
