Low rpm operation has been discussed in the past here. See posts by Brian Degulias (SP) and others. I do it routinely with just occasional higher rpm to burn off accumulated oil/carbon. I do add a cetane boost to the fuel and use 170 degree thermostats. 6V92TA, 425 hp.
