  1. 12v battery parallel unit

This is the price at Sam's:

    Number: 24530
Part Description: Solenoid 12VDC Battery Parallel
    Unit of Measure: EA
    Price: $200.60

Have been told I can use a solenoid and/or switch made for a diesel truck that will do the same thing and cost less than $20 (on the boat/us post).

    Re: 12v battery parallel unit

Does your parallel switch have a choice of port or starboard (depends on which bank has the power to run the solenoid). If so, it may be more complex, or is that in the switches, not the solenoid?

    Don't bet on it.

That parallel solenoid is a BIG SOB. If you can find one with the same rating, ok, have at it.

The wiring is straight-forward - nothing complicated there at all. The problem is the rating on the contacts.

I bought one from Wards Marine Electric Ft. Lauderdale for about $120

    Re: 12v battery parallel unit

Battery parallel switches must be capable of carrying the current between two battery (banks) of different potential. The more batteries, the more current. Two ordinary group 27 car batteries with a charge difference of 1 volt can have a current flow of 1000 or more amperes when first connected, think of two banks of four 8d batteries each. It's a lot of current. Truck parts were never designed to handle such loads.

The worst-case is when you need it the most.

You have one DEAD bank and one LIVE bank.

You need to start BOTH engines.

You start the FIRST one (with the LIVE bank). Now you close the parallel relay to start the second engine. The current through that set of points is ENORMOUS and if you use a cheap solenoid you can GUARANTEE that it will either weld on (BAD!) or melt down (at least as bad) internally.
