Re: Which nut first, BIG or small?

You can find plenty of internet recommendations/suggestions for both ways. To me, logically the large nut goes on first, just as it does with some types of engine connecting rods that use the same locking technique. But, as I said there is plenty of arguing for both methods when it come to prop shafts. Interestingly, there is NONE when it comes to engine connecting rods...wonder why?

Far more important is the fitting/lapping of the prop onto the tapered shaft and ensuring that the prop position after lapping does not change when the woodruff key is installed. IOW, the prop is held on the shaft firmly by the taper, not by the key.

I have had two different yards install props on our 53. One installed the big nut first; one installed the little one first. The props didn't seem to care, remaining firmly in place in both cases.

According to Captain Dave, the little one goes on first. This debate will endure as long as there are propellers on boats.

Little then big but I've seen it both ways. Spoke to the prop shop and they agree.
