    Cat vs. MTU / Detroit

What is your opinion and why? Cat C30 vs. MTU 12v2000? 2006 vintage. About 1500HP each. I dont know much about either of these engines. Maintenance, parts, reliability?
    Thanks,

    Tony

Does anyone have opinions on this? Should I be asking in another forum?
    Thanks,

Re: Cat vs. MTU / Detroit

A lot depends on which C30 and what has been done to them. There were some issues but most were addressed with updates. Both engines are strong runners in that HP range. Both are reliable and both with cost around the same when they need service. Much depends on your location and available service techs. It's typically easier to find a Cat mechanic but the MTUs are popular in big boats. Those are the smaller versions of the 16V2000 which are the hot engine for big SF and MY in the 100FT plus range. The MTUs are services by most of the big Detroit shops. Try boatdiesel.com for more detailed info
