Being a recent purchaser of a 1987 Hatteras 40' motor yacht, getting well maintenance acquainted is a slow but very important process for me.
I can't find access to the pickings on my prop shafts to see if they need tightening. Can anyone explain this process to me?

Prop shaft bearing maintenance

Re: Prop shaft bearing maintenance
I assume you are referring to the shaft log. It is located behind the engine coupling. There are two bolts protruding from a splash deflector. There is a nut on each bolt that you tighten to control the drip at the log. To change the packing, remove the two nuts and the splash deflector. Remove the yoke that is compressing the packing. Remove the packing with screws or tool made for this job. The new packing should be 3/8 inch. Ron
