Re wife learning to shoot...we met some folks who are very much into cowboy action shooting. The wife, up till then, was deathly afraid of guns/having them around. Now she quite a good shot and really enjoys shooting. So I agree that it may be possible for your wife to change her view if given the right sort of opportunity/instruction.
If you watch 99.9 percent of the UTube videos of women with guns, most women would probably be (and rightly so) afraid or at least totally against guns. The videos show moronic males handing their wife/girlfriend some large caliber pistol/rifle/shotgun for the first time and then, usually, the woman looking like a fool/butt of jokes due to the recoil/whatever. It's not helpful...

As this thread ran on and on i just returned from a 4 week trip to the exumas anchoring out most of the time, sometimes in isolated spots. No security issues, didnt hear any concern or wild pirate stories from anyone
