    Mark,

I believe you need to use Zinc Chromate primer. Interlux makes a two part primer for etching. I mixed and applied 2 coats, then two coats of Awlgrip primer, before painting the top coat. On our 1969 model 53' MY has aluminum dodger boards running down the sides, zinc chromate was needed.

    Re: primer for brass/bronze

thanks so much for the response's,
here is what awlgrip says and i have heard this before
"sand all surfaces to bare metal, mix a pot of 545 anti-corrosive primer, brighten one port hole with 100 grit paper clean with denatured alchol and prime within 5 minutes of sanding"this is because the bronze emits a "grease" when sanded that inhibits any primer from sticking, 2nd coat of 545 within 5 days and proceed with topcoats
this is why i have problems getting paint to stick to props, rudders, and struts
thanks again i thought i would pass this on
