    What does she weigh?

If you're like me, you're often involved in conversations surrounding your boat/yacht with novices....whom ask some easy (and perhaps not so easy) questions regarding our vessels:

    - How long is it (she)?
    - How wide is "she"?
    - How much water (draft) does she require?
    - How many bathrooms (heads)?
    - How many can SHE sleep?

    - How much does she weigh?

So here's where it gets tricky:

Capt.: Her Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) is 76 tons.
    Novice: Her WHAT?
Capt.: Well, if you filled her with "fresh water", she'd weigh xxx, with salt water xxxx, with cold water xxxxx and with salt water xxxxxx....oh never mind.

Capt.: Her NET Registered Tonnage (NRT) is 61 tons.
    Novice: Her WHAT?
Capt.: Well, if you filled the open spaces with "stuff", she'd weigh. Yeah, I know, sand weighs more than water and stones weigh more than sand, so work with me here.....

Capt.: Her Displacement is XXX (even I don't know this answer).
Novice: I thought Displacement was how much water she needed.
Capt.: Well, no. It's actually the amount of water she's displacing at the water line, times the specific gravity of water (which we learned above is different from fresh to salt and warm to cool).....

About this time, they notice that I've got a couple of big screen tv's and the conversation turns technical:
Novice: So, do you get ESPN?
Capt: YEP! Beer's in the fridge, help yourself. Would you like the remote?

So, with all this said (and all I know), how much does Kismet WEIGH (what's her DISPLACEMENT)? I've seen figures from 40 - 55 tons published. Anyone know? I'm going to the braintrust before calling Hatteras!

    Consider your question.
Is it polite/safe to as a lady her weight?

    Jeff,
Last weekend we saw a 1977 LRC at Bluewater Yacht in Hampton. The boat's name is Kingdom, homeport Scottsdale, AZ. The vessel documentation indicates that the gross tonnage is 65, net tonnage 52. BTW, are you still considering relocating to Hampton?

    Re: What does she weigh?

Well, in my opinion, she IS the "fat lady" and she does sing! She just hasn't told me how much she really weighs!

Mike, not sure what are plans are at this moment. We're headed to Charleston in mid-October for the LRC rendevous and from there, it's uncertain. The tentative plans are to leave her in Charleston for a few weeks, then come back and take her to Palm Beach in mid-November. We have a week long business meeting there, so it coincides well.

After that, we'd like to bring her over the Ft. Myers area (my parents are Naples "snow birds") and use her as a home base until spring.

All of that said, unfortunately (or fortunately!) business is getting in the way. We have a few major clients coming on board over the next 4-6 months, along with a corporate move over the Christmas holiday. While I can't complain, especially considering the economy, I really envisioned having more time to cruise.

So, back to your question: When we head north in the Spring, not sure where we'll end up. We LOVE the Deltaville area. It's quiet, quaint and a pretty easy drive from Richmond (1.5 hours). Hampton is the same drive, but all interstate (and a lot of weekend gridlock during the summer). At this point, it's too far out to put a lot of thought into it.

Hope all is well with you and Cindy!

    Re: What does she weigh?

I launched Kingdom about 2 weeks ago and the travel lift had her at about 110K Lbs. ( Bottom freshly painted and some other work was done ) That's with most of the old owners personal items packed but on board. I believe she left that Wed for the Carolinas. My guess would be plenty of fuel and water on board when she was hauled.

She is a great boat and served her old owner well. I hope the new owners get as much joy out of her as the old ones did.
