    Re: 1988 48 Californian

Man, what a beautiful boat! The thing I always loved about the Californian was the upper and lower salons. That was THE single biggest factor in my choosing my 58. You can plush out the lower and put more practical stuff in the upper. The only thing missing on the Californian is a lower control station.

    Re: 1988 48 Californian

You guys have me curious now as I did not know that Carver was involved or that there was a big difference in Californians. Would anyone care to fill us in on when or what year model did they change from Californians to Carver Californians?

A friend has an early 1990's (I believe) Californian 56 Cockpit Motoryacht that he just loves, but I have never ridden on it.

Thanks and good luck selling the 48 for your friend!

I believe it was in 87 when Carver bought the company. It was in late '88, early '89 when Carver moved production to North Carolina. While there is no comparison between the quality of the California built boats and the NC Carver boats, the Carver Californians are still much better made than Carver's own boats. I think the 55 CPMY is the same hull as the 48 and was built in California.

I believe you are right. My friends boat left the Tustin CA plant in late 87. He bought it in Dec 87 and is an 88 model. Supposed to be the last 48 off the line under Jule Marshall's control. The Marshall built californians had walnut interiors. The Carver built boats have teak interiors.
Irwin Jacobs bought Californian then bought Hatteras. He dropped the Cali's to remove them from competing with Hatts and they were too expensive to be Carvers. Marshall later started building price point Navigators.

The Marshall built Californian boats were very well built, even overbuilt. They are great running boats. The systems are not in the same category as Hatt though.

Yes it is a 48 with cockpit. The 55's I have run felt light in the stern.

How and when did Wellcraft tie into the Californians?

I remember they marketed them, but don't remember if any were actually built at their facility near Bradenton. I used to lust after the 38 in the early 80's and had the chance to run one with 375 Cats. I don't remember very much about it, but I do remember it ran great and was surprisingly fast. There are still a bunch of those around this area which were sold by the then local Wellcraft dealer.

Wellcraft purchased Californian in the early 80's. I believe they held the company until Carver bought it. Production stayed in California. Not sure but I think Jules Marshall still ran the plant. Marshall later went on to form Navigator and has since bought the Californian name. New Californians are now built by Navigator.
