Although I like the much older classic Hatteras Yachts, I came across this 1987 53 for 195,000.

1-What do you think about this boat as this price?
2-What would you say is the annual projected cost to operate minus fuel? I'm estimating 20-25K? Lot's of variables like dockage, but for those who have the 53, what your typical operating cost on an annual basis?
3-Has anyone operated one of these as a part time charter to write off or generate income to offset some of the cost? I'm thinking Hilton Head Island SC needs a boat this size for charter.

Re: 1987 53 FOR 195k
The whole boat needs to be painted and lots of other $$$$$$ spent on it. That is why its priced at that point. And I don't think its stablized.

Re: 1987 53 FOR 195k
Hi Cody here,
I have a 1974 / 53 classic with 8V71's, 15kv gen, this boat was a charter boat on the Hudson River, it ran as a part time charter /livaboard for 5 years before I bought her: at eight kn /8 gal / hr aprox cost @ $4 / $ 32 / hr 3 hr cruise x 6 passengers @ $ 50 each + appetizers aprox $ 200 per trip clear.
Depending on the local market it can cover most of your costs.
It costs me 2k for insurance 4k for dock / 2-3 k for upkeep and upgrades.
If you are serious about doing this she is for sale on Yacht world 53 1974 hat in RI

Re: 1987 53 FOR 195k
I was interested in this boat when it sat out of the water for all of 2007 in Wickford RI. At the time the hull paint was very good, it was stabilized, and had a bow thruster. The interior was nice, but nothing had ever been done in the heads or galley. I thought it was a good buy at $250, but the owner laughed.
