    Price of a new 1981 43 DCMY in 1981?

I'm relatively new to this site so I hope this isn't a dumb question but does anybody know what the price of a new 43 DCMY was in 1981? Any information to help me get a sense of the original price would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dennis

About $250-270k, if memory serves. I have an original price list, but would have to dig it up!

Probably worth finding a price list, as I remember talking about a new 1979 43 DCFB and the offered price was $160K. Not sure of the list price at the time. This boat had the FB, AC, swim platform, windlass, and the TI engines. I would speculate that the 1981 equivalent would have been more around $180/190K selling price. I do have an 1974 price list that shows $120K list for the equivalent boat.

Ok, you forced my hand. Documentation vs. admittedly bad memory.

1979 43'DCFB test "reprinted from Boating magazine, September 1979"
    Boat Test N. 281:
With 250hp DD 6-71n's (not familiar with them), $155k
Test boat with DD 6-71Ti's 390hp, plus flybridge, AC, pulpit, windlass, swim platform, depth sounder, autopilot, furniture (?) $213,007 at the plant.

Official "Hatteras Fiberglass Yachts, STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS AND PRICES" list
    Dated "OCTOBER 15, 1972".
Printout of the page from the list for "43 Double Cabin"
Oct 1972: 43'DC only (no flybridge): Another boat test,
    Gas $70k
    DD 8v-53's $87.8k
    DD 6-71N's $89.8k
    Cummins 903's $92.3k
No, I do not have pages for any of the other yachts listed.

From: "Hatteras The World's Premier Yacht Builder", "BASE PRICES",
Dated "March 16, 1997". Callout from list for :
    40'MY $409k
    43' CPMY DD 6v-92 545 shp $793k

Yes, the price list does include convertibles (39-70'), and Motor Yachts from 40' to 74' ($2.2M)

I could swear I have another price list, but could not find it tonight. Will post if I do. Still have not found my last and final price list.

Re: Price of a new 1981 43 DCMY in 1981?

I suspect Spartons recollection is close to reality. Don't forget that in 1979 we had the 2nd oil embargo with the result being much higher prices on all petro chemical products including resins etc for making our boats. By the time the dust settled the 81 models were probably much higher than the late 70's. Another interesting tidbit is that begining with 1980 much less material was used in the mfg of the fibreglass parts. I had a 1973 43 DC for many years and was impressed with how heavy it was. The lift operator at our dock gave me the weights on the fore and aft slings. Unfortunately I don't recall what it was but it was well into the 40K's. Some years later we decided to buy a later model with the queen bed and TI's (1980). The same lift operator noted the weight and it was a few thousand (about 4K) lighter. On one of my trips down to Highpoint, I inquired why the difference and was told that they had learned a lot about fibreglass since the early days and that they in fact reduced the amount of resin and glass in the layup schedules but the boats were just as strong. Perhaps it was the case, but I think the older models rode better and were much stronger.

Since the price of petro chemicals went up substantially, the company needed to maintain some sort of control on their costs so I guess it made sense to lighten up some and raise the price some as well.

Does this mean you have a copy of a boating mag test of a 1979 43 DC?

If so, any chance you might send me a photocopy or a pdf of the test. I would certainly like to read it. I had an mostly complete collection of Boating with several going back to the late 60's but do not recall that test. My wife never understood why I would keep stacks of old magazines, but Katrina took care of that.

I would love to read any review on the 43DC, even if it is 35 years old. If anyone has anything in electronic format they could PM me I would be very grateful.

I have at least one boat test, so could scan and post, which I will try to do...later, I'm afraid.

Man, you guys are throwing down on me; making me work! So I updated my prices with the 'cites' for the documentation. They are as official as I can make them.

If there are requests for scan and post, I will do so. Also, I have several old brochures, some of which I don't think Sam's has on the HOF site.

But will be time consuming, as my PC's are shifted around all not hooked up for easy access at this point.
