When we put the cats in the 34 in 71 diesel was .17 vs .35 for gas. It was always cheaper until the gas shortages of the early 80's when some one figured out that people who buy diesel had no choice as it was mostly commercial operators trucks etc. the oh it cost more to make argument falls apart if you look at the timeline of price increases. I remember in 81-82 during the height of the "shortage" weaving my way down cheasepeak bay because it was packed with tankers all low in the water. When I got to Norfolk the Congo line of tankers extended through the bay bridge as far as the eye could see.
