Beware of Discount Marine
Discount Marine, PA, promises 2 day delivery (in writing). Takes over two days to fill an order. When questioned, they respond saying five days (transit) is the reality and I if really expected two day I should have paid extra. No attempt to try and explain or offer something to mitigate. Many reputable businesses out there. This one ain’t.

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Bait and switch. However sense you stayed at one of their hotels recently you win a weeks vacation if you sit thru one of their no obligation seminars. Sound familiar?

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Discount marine supply.com?
What I read online was...." Need it fast?" Followed by an invite to pay more for 2nd day delivery.
Did you expect ground freight delivery within 2 days of your order?
-
Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Standard ground freight should get it to him in 2 days if its shipped and not sat on for a couple of days.

What I expect is what they advertised. Scott’s correct, regular ground is a 2 day deal from there. Anyway, the email I received from them was pretty much an F/U.

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
All these discount companies play games when it benefits them. They may not have inventory and need to order from a supplier when they get an order. I declined to set up that type of business model when my suppliers offered it to me.
-
Re: Beware of Discount Marine
I have the same problem with Corvette parts suppliers for the project we are doing. The only company I know of that really ships fast so that you get it in two days is McMaster-Carr. UNfortunately they don't stock a lot of Vette or Hatteras parts. Although they have a lot of very useful stuff.
Defender seems pretty good for their word on when you will get something. I have had fairly good luck with them.
-
Re: Beware of Discount Marine
West Marine has always been upfront with me on their shipping times:rolleyes:
-
Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Online is so competitive now, it’s odd they’ve chosen a model that’s guaranteed to pi$$ people off. Many free shippping deals I’ve seen lately try to induce you to pay by guaranteeing 2 week delivery for free (of course you don’t see the “2 weeks” until you’ve entered all your order info), then a range of paid options for better delivery times. I always choose the free 2 week delivery, and it arrives in 3 days, sometimes even the next day.

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
I just sent a key by UPS from Michigan to Florida. Overnight cost was $80.+. It was $34.00 for 2 days. Two day guaranteed ( we'll try) by USPS of an envelope was $37.00
Many internet vendors " drop ship" and it seems that all offer shipping alternatives an escalating cost from overnight to ground which can take up to 5 business days. That includes Amazon.
I have been amazed at how quickly a purchase was received---- and dismayed at delay. Such is life.
-
Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Simple solution.
Buy from me.
I will not lie about shipping times or inventory. I ship as soon as possible and dont charge the customer in advance.
I dont sell items Im not authorized to resell and I dont sell "like new".
I may not be able to beat the other guys prices all the time but I do pretty good on electronics and my other lines.
-
Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Unfortunately all most all of the marine internet retailers these days are just order takers with little or no inventory that either have the items drop shipped or wait for delivery from a supplier or OEM. For the most part I use Defender and BOW and buy all my tackle from Fishermans Center in Riviera Beach, not a fan of any chains. McMaster Carr is a godsend for soooooo many things, lucky they're a 1 day ship for us. .

(5/16)From me to them:
When the post office says it received an in-stock package 53 hours after you received the order then there is a problem. Shipping Priority Mail is sort of senseless if you, the seller, aren’t motivated. Based on the info you sent me, I should have this package tomorrow. But it’s just left your dock, so I guess I won’t.
(5-16)Robert,
Your package left our facilty yesterday. The day after you placed the order. We do offer 2nd day and next day services as well, however as you spoke of the internet. Most people are on there just to pinch pennies so if you needed this immediately perhaps spending the $10.00 for 2nd day delivery would have been wise. Go ahead and post this and that based on your personal opinions. There is so much of that which goes on these days nobody believes or reads it anyway. Ground is 3-5 days so that means 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. If you have it by the 19th we have fulfilled our agreement.
Have a wonderful afternoon, sorry to have negatively impacted your recreation time.
Cristian Graywww.discountmarinesupplies.com
The package just left PA this morning.
Well, these people continue to wallow in their ineptitude. In line with their character, they now want to insult older people who have done well. Being retired, I've plenty of discretionary time to help them along.
(5-17)Robert,
Thank you for telling us how to run our business. We get this a lot from people (typically retired) who think they know everything about everything. It's part of dealing with the discretionary income segment of society.
Shipping Method: Ground Shipping (3-5 Day Delivery)
Please take your business elsewhere in the future.
Cristian Graywww.discountmarinesupplies.com
What a great attitude. I think I'll take his advice. Hope you do the same.

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Well Bob, it gets worse. This guy just takes the bait every time.
(5-17)Robert, nobody cares about the rantings of a cranky old man. Your wasting everybody's time. In 15 years your not the first of your kind. In fact your a dime a dozen. Get over yourself, your opinion holds no more value than anybody elses. If this is what you choose to spend your remaining days doing, it's pretty unfortunately actually. I guess you found your purpose this week however. Glad you found a hobby.
Please leave us alone we have many, many orders to process.
Cristian Graywww.discountmarinesupplies.com
I knew 64 was getting up there, but I had no idea I had one foot in the grave. I never thought of this as a hobby--more like sport really. Anyway, I've got the time while I await my shipment.
-
Re: Beware of Discount Marine
RAC, wait til you're MY age, then you'll really be cranky.
I think the fact that he gets a lot of letters like this says something, but he doesn't seem to realize it. Evidently he doesn't need the sales he would have gotten from other Forum members if they'd given you better service. Oh, well.

Fifty shades of idiot, that's Cristian Gray. Probably a pseudonym, or maybe he's also the CEO and housekeeping supervisor all rolled into one.

Awful! Thanks for sharing Rob! These guys: http://www.impcorporation.com/en-us are pretty awesome! They buy and sell used marine engines. Hope all works out for ya.

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Still don't get it. Apparently you're letting USPS off the hook though they often generate inconsistent information. The notice from USPS states the package was mailed on the 15th not the 16th. That notice also indicates it was sent by Priority Mail with a two day expected delivery. The tracking information seems to have the package in USPS hands from the 16th. The first USPS contradiction. It then remains with USPS for another day before processing. And this is the fault of the vendor? Not privy to your end of the " complaint exchange" though without question, the vendor's comments are inappropriate.

It does?
Attachment 25792
They stuck a label on it and it sat for another day before being picked up.
As for contradictions, I don't think so. The vendor considered it shipped and sent a notification via Stamps.com. That's not the post office. It does appear the USPS info is accurate. I guess Stamps.com assumed the vendor would not sit on the shipment for a day.
The rub is Discount Marine Supply had a chance to clear up the problem with a little TLC. I haven't asked for anything from them. I brought it to their attention. Rather than acknowledge my inquiry, they went negative. You are right, they are completely out of line. Sort of makes you wonder how they'd handle a refund, don't it?
BTW, I haven't heard from them since they begged me to send them the 2 day estimate; they don't even know what they're sending out to the customer! Five days is a long way from two days. Once I sent them what they sent me, I can't get a reply or the guy on the phone. Hell, he sent me four emails in short order until the uh oh moment. Clearly Discount Marine Supply is a disreputable company and Christian Gray has yet to grow a pair--in my opinion.

Everyone should be giving Scott first crack at anything he carries. If u find it for a lot less, tell him and see if he can make it happen. Many times if i tell my manufacturers of a low ball internet offering they'll give me an extra discount to compete. We need to take care of those that take care of us. Almost every technical question posed has benefited from his input. Do unto others.

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
I have not commented on this. All I will say is that I would never tell someone to take their business elsewhere. I would tell them what I can and cannot do and they may indeed decide to take their business elsewhere, but I would never tell them that. Obviously, this guy lacks what they call the social skills.

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
Jim,
Im not sure which post your referring to as commercial in the PM. the one where I jokingly say buy from me or the one where you recommend members buy from defender.
Is it different for others to recommend non members for purchasing than I recommending my favorite company that happens to be mine.
FWIW I do not compete with SAM'S but defender and bow does on anything they can and they do not respect manufacturers pricing policy and violate them when it suits them. They also play games with sales tax but that's another discussion.
I think starting a thread to sell something is more of a commercial post then offering an alternative to a problematic online reseller. I asked Doug about offering a deal for members and he helped by putting my info in the banners.
I also see others (maybe a broker or two) commenting on their services yet I don't know if they are asked to remove those posts either.
I sit here quietly as you and others spout how great the online cheaters are but I do not break the rules to undercut other dealers. I recomend Sam's to others on and off the site and DO NOT sell similar items to them so I hope I am not though to be out of line but there are a bunch of my happy customers that are members here that maybe need to speak up.
I try to offer my brethren on the forum good deals and I hope the ones that buy from me appreciate it.

Well, my "good grief" comment was directed toward Rob. May I ask what you ordered and if this is the first time you have done business with this company?
Seems like an awful lot of time an effort to be a PITA over a difference of one day. As for never telling someone to take their business elsewhere, in my 37 years of business (in a highly competitive industry), I have done that once. This in a similar case where a customer wanted to rant and rave incessantly over something they too had options where expedited shipment is concerned.
To wit, I had a customer place an order for a safe that I did in fact have in stock, but he was closer to the manufacturer than he was me. That would result in lower shipping charges, and despite my telling him that shipping times would vary, he called multiple times to complain he hadn't heard anything from anyone. I told him he wouldn't hear anything until the item had been shipped. He wanted to speak with someone at the factory, so I gave him their number and told him he was more than welcomed to talk to my sales rep there.
He proceeded to give this woman hell about how inept they were, and that all it would take is for them to simply slap a label on a his safe and load it onto a truck. This after I explained to him they don't have inventory just sitting around, and that his order would be shipped in the order it was received. My sales rep called me a few days later and said this guy was calling her daily with his continued complaints, even though she had given him an estimated shipping date.
With that, I called this gentleman and suggested he cancel his order as we obviously weren't capable of making him happy. He once again wanted to place blame on my sales rep (with some very choice words) and the manufacturer, so I told him I was canceling the order and refunding his money. He bitched and moaned when I defended my sales rep, but that came back to me in spades a few years later when that sales rep gave me a heads up that I was "being screwed" by her employer. She appreciated the fact that I stood up for her, and she returned the favor.
Bottom line is, the customer isn't always right, and life is too short to get so torn up over something so trivial. My guess is the seller had simply had enough and wasn't interested in a repeat performance down the road. No offense, Rob, but dayum!

Re: Beware of Discount Marine
I see a difference between offering one's expertise or products in response to members' inquiries and self-promotion. I can envision this sight if retailers freely posted here alongside boat owners. I don't think the result would serve the best interests of Hatteras owners. Best case, owners get reasonably unbiased information. Worst case, information could be given for commercial purposes under the guise of friendly advice. And while I'm at the head of the class when it comes to bashing the inequities of a WM or DMS, there are no business interests served by my expression.
I am not making an allegation. In fact, I appreciate the full disclosure of members giving advice here. I think our posters are honorable gentlemen. I wouldn't mind links to websites or just contact info directing us to reputable member owned businesses.

Interlux non-skid stuff you add to paint, and first time buyer.
Well as I mentioned, Randy, I just made them aware and it was off to the races. I was looking at it as sort of sport. I can see where some others fail to see the levity, others do.
I've also declined business from a few in the past and left it at that. This guy, however, is just plain nuts. Since yesterday, he's used my credit card info to identify a business located at my address. He's researched the property and sent me a copy of a customer complaint for a business that I'm not involved with other than a landlord/tenant relationship claiming I am crooked. What am I doing about it? Not a damn thing. He's hanging himself. But in the meantime, Sky was half right about his lacking social skills. He's shaping up to be a sociopath.

Well, that certainly puts this guy in a whole different light. He is actually breaking the law if he retained your credit card number, but my guess is your name and shipping information was more than sufficient for him to learn quite a bit of information on you.
Perhaps this is sport to him also, and it's game on! You may have just met your match with this guy, but I applaud you for letting it go. Nothing good can come of it.
