Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fish
Budget up to $285,000 cash or $375,000 if boat is stunning (would have to borrow $90K to go that high, but that is doable if inspired enough) The Hatteras 56 Nightingale is a good example of what we want, but price is beyond budget (not to mention distance from us in SC) Alternatively, need time machine to buy 58 yacht fish, Pizzazs !
But seriously, no dreaming here, ready to buy NOW. Email
procyon at hargray dot com or call 843-271-2106

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
I should mention that we are aware of the beautiful 53 yacht fish for sale in St. Petersburg...I have been aboard in fact (although only at night), but the problem with that one, for our purposes anyway, is only two staterooms and no proper place to store a dinghy.
In fact I suppose any 53 would have to be a MY rather than yacht fish due to the dinghy issue....unless it was modified like Misty, a restored 53 yacht fish previously in Ft. Lauderdale, which extended the flybridge enough to hold low profile davit and RIB w/4 stroke (all brand new, never used). Someone beat us to that one.
Speaking of Misty, am I the only one here that was aware of that one ? Interesting story there... 86 year old spry codger started restoration about 5 years ago, worked on it nearly every day (in canal behind his 10,000 sq ft mansion), finished it at age 90 and soon after died ! Wife and daughter just wanted it gone...blocking view, reminded them of him.... sold for $200K about two months ago ! Misty was a 3 stateroom 53 YF and would have worked for us...we were sick about missing that one as it was jaw drop beautiful* and relatively low original engine hours.
*Even though it was under contract when we went aboard there still was an excellent possiblity we could buy it according to listing broker...but that's another story...

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
People should be beating your door down any second now. Your problem will be finding one nice enough to justify that kind of money.
-
Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
Or all the brokers know that's not realistic.
No real serious buyer shows his hand so openly.
I work with customers in that budget range but they do not offer up so much extra so fast.
-
Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
Your budget should get you a boat like Nightingale. Like Jim said, your biggest problem is going to be finding a 53-58 Hatt that justifies that high of a price. Don't be deterred by high asking prices. As a qualified cash buyer any serious seller should consider your offer. Make an offer based on what you think the boat is worth to you. If the seller disagrees they will counter or decline. Either way no loss on your part. On the other hand, you'd be surprised how many high priced boats end up selling for far less than their ask. You don't want to be the guy saying,"If I knew he would have accepted $xx I would have bought it." Good luck with your search and welcome.

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
Truly exceptional boats are few and far between. If you find the right one, don't delay. I know of a few stunning examples, sadly not Hatterii.

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
Hey Hatteras Owners Forum Members!
We need to be shaking the bushes for this guy! I spoke with this super nice gentleman earlier this week. (Where was this guy when I was trying to sell PIZZAZ a couple of years ago)? Or Sea Eric when KISMET the 58LRC was available? AND he's willing to pay a more than fair price for a stunningly loved example of an upstairs "living room" "stand-up engine room" Motor Yacht.
I even e-mailed the guy who bought my 58 PIZZAZ, to inquire if he "might" consider selling. His answer was No.
I have strongly recommended he carefully consider TOP HATT AND TAILS. In my humble opinion, it's probably the most Hatteras for the money available today. The right model year. The right engines. The right hours. The fresh water since new history. New Generator. Where do I stop??? I personally think this would be his most intelligent choice in the marketplace right now. Because of the boat it's reported to be. Everything that's truly nice is suddenly "selling like hotcakes"! The 1990 Galley Up Chris Craft 501 and Sea Eric's 50 Viking listing were both solid examples of a fair pricefor truly nice boats this year.
I'm going on record that I think he would loose the least amount of money over the next 5 years by choosing this possible gem of a 53 Hatteras in Ohio. (Refer to my post from about 3 years ago on "Depreciation").
The point I'm trying to make is this poor guy has already seen and considered so many different boat so far... He simply can't find a the right one. It's too bad so many brokers have no idea what "turn key" and "pristine" truly mean.
...And realistically...the other 2 "near perfect" Hatteras's I'm aware of are worth every penny, but still overpriced for the marketplace. Who's ready to sell to a buyer who will truly appreciate your boat?

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
THAT- nice boat. Doesn't seem to have an inverter, but that is easily remedied.

Yes, there is some risk they would up their price some to better match my max but that doesn't mean I will accept that price. Each boat will be reviewed and price offered by me on it's own merits. $285 was simply my max...I'd rather spend $200K or less....like the deal on the 53 YF "Misty" I mentioned. Bottom line is your statement about "no real serious buyer shows his hand so openly" is flat out wrong, as I'm serious as a heart attack on this. I've already had a contract on one boat, at 1991 Viking 55 MY named Lady Mira in Seabrook, TX. Blew over $2,500 on surveys and travel time on that one...only to find out it needed $80,000 worth of exterior work and nixed the deal when the owner wouldn't budge (about 7 weeks ago).
(btw, the broker for Lady Mira, Texas Power Yachts, is to this day still showing as their main photo a photo that is over 5 years old, and they know it...the listing broker took the photo ! Unfortunately the boat looks very different from that photo today)

FWIW, I called the Nightingale captain last week on the notion that since it has been on the market for some time maybe owner would take $375K. But was told he already turned down somewhat more than that. Wish I had thought to ask when that was, since it might matter if that was a month or a year ago.
An older broker who has been in the business many decades, told me just yesterday that most of the time the first offer a yacht seller gets, ends up being the highest offer he will ever get.
I can believe that, as I've had similar experience selling used machine tools over the years. Many an offer I could kick myself for not taking looking back on it now !

If only it wasn't so far away from us (Nightingale is as well of course) Any WAG from you guys on the time and cost to get it Beaufort, SC, assuming running at 9 knots...cost via professional captan or doing it ourselves ?

If it is the boat that fits your wants, what difference would it make? If it is the right boat and you buy it on the spot you could probably have it in your slip within 6 weeks easily, which is nothing compared to how long you have been looking for the right one. I am not being flippant, just looking at it from a different perspective.

Until I see in in person there is no way to know if it is "the one I want" so might as well be discussing delivery fees in the meantime. By your "perspective" I suppose we should extend our search to Spain and Lake Titicaca as well ;)

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
This is truly one of the most ridiculous threads that I have seen on this site.
It this chap is a serous buyer, why doesn't he retain a buyer's broker who is experienced in vintage Hatteras yachts to assist him rather than put himself out to the members of this site? Many well intentioned but not professional yacht brokers are chattering as much as an Obama speech!

Malacron. There is a very clean 1981 53' MY that has recently been repo'd and is offered by National Yacht Sales in Annapolis. It is in the slip next to my 1984 53 MY Proud Mary and has several nice updates I've yet to get to on my boat. I do not yet see the listing online, but a phone call should get details. R/ BC

Why not do both ?? (which is the case) And what is wrong with "putting myself out the members of this site" ? I can separate the wheat from the chaff easily enough....and all I read is chaff from you.
And FWIW, I've already been in contact with an interesting 58 Yacht fish owner who has just now decided to sell his baby, not listed anywhere yet, due to the topic here. As to whether I will buy that or not I have no idea yet, but the topic is producing some results already, plus the tips from Pizzaz and Boatboy which also sound interesting.
And maybe I'm sounding like a neophyte to some of you but rest assured this is not my first boat rodeo....I know more about these boats than most brokers...way more in some cases.

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
Cost will vary greatly depending on how you want to run and who runs it. If you buy a GL boat you'll be running slow through the NY canal system. Figure roughly 1NMPG when running at hull speed.

Right, which is why I already stated 9 knots. Was hoping someone here had already make a similar journey or could point me to a nautical equivalent of Mapquest to see the most logical route on an iPad or desktop computer.

Re: Want to Buy - Hatteras 53-58 that has been restored, turn key.. yacht or yacht fi
You need to sit down with a chart kit and plot your course. I usually figure an 8-10 Hour day. Some days are shorter or longer depending on where I want to stop. I also like to run faster so my stops would be further and days fewer. You can get a basic idea of distance by plotting a rough course on this site http://www.freemaptools.com/measure-distance.htm
Set the distance to NM so you can estimate fuel usage better. This is a well traveled route for many of the bigger MYs that make the trip each year. An experienced captain should be able to give you an accurate estimate of days needed. I'd figure at least $500 per day for a captain and mate, that may be a bit low but not too far off.

I just thought that to a shooter like you that delivery fees would not keep you from buying the right boat. I never said the Ohio boat was "The one you want".

OK, thanks. I called and no one knew the boat, so I got passed from person to person (in Annapolis office) and finally left voice mail about it with the final link in their chain, waiting to hear back.
Aren't reposessions sometimes problematic in that the "owner" tends to strip off expensive electronics and such ?

Every boat and deal is different. Only way to tell if it's a deal worth making is to go take a look. Most repos aren't worth the effort but many are nice boats that were cared for until the owner had a change in life.

True enough. National Yacht Sales guy finally called back. He can't give a price or exact availability time yet but he did email me some photos. It's not bad looking really but a bit too iffy for me I think...esp the look of the engines.

The LOOK of the engines? What looks bad? Anyone can put a coat of paint and new hoses on a tired, worn out smoker. You really can't tell anything until you start them and run some diagnostics.
I probably shouldn't say this since it should be obvious, but without actually getting aboard you can't tell too much from photos or even from talking to a broker. When I bought my 53 in 2004, I traveled all over and looked at some dogs that were supposed to be outstanding from what the brokers had told me.

You also need to tread very carefully when dealing with National liquidators. They're notorious for unethical practices.

Seeing as I didn't anticipate being interrogated about the comment, I don't remember exact details but the engine rooms were pretty dirty in general with some areas around the pipes indicating salt water leakage (green scum) and oil leakage.
But true, they might be absolutely fine regardless...it was just that combined with other hints here and there that the boat leaned toward the "not well cared for category". But also true one really needs to see a boat in real life.
In fact in my experience the brokers often take terrible photos and the boat is often considerably nicer in real life than in the photos. But sometimes just the opposite, like the Viking 55 MY, Lady Mira in Texas that has a 5 year old photo of the exterior on Yachtworld and the vessel looks much worse than that today.

Yeah I've read that before somewhere...anoother reason I'm not rushing up to Annapolis to view the boat when it becomes available. But if it was closer to us I'd certainly check it out just to see what it's like in real life.

I wouldn't put too much effort into it either unless you get some good details on it first. If you get a hit list with a number of boats on it, you may be able to look at a bunch of them over a long weekend driving up the coast. I looked at a bunch of boats on a drive from NJ to FL stopping along the way. The dogs you can write off quickly and move on to the next potential boat. I had a buyers broker setting up appointments for me as I went. Made it easy to get onto many boats in short notice. Spent a few days in Fl looking at a bunch there. I ended buying a boat on the West coast of FL. Not an ideal location for me but it was the best boat and best deal for me. 1500NM trip home and was well worth the cost and effort. Don't rule out a GL boat because of it's location. It the boat is exceptional it's well worth the effort to get her to SC.

I don't feel he was attempting to interrogate you. Grow a set and stop whining about members responses. Most members on here are only trying to help, and most everyone gets along. There's never a dumb question and that goes both ways. I'm sure the reason he asked was, without getting "philosophical" on you is never judge a book by it's cover. Freshly rebuilt tight Older motors with faded paint and years of oil drip stains could look bad but be great running just in need of a detail and paint. On the other hand tired motors freshly painted may look good at a glance. Like mentioned you can't tell until inspected by a quailified person.
That being said if you answered the question about "what" looked bad he may have been able to give you more detailed insight.
The answer you provided after he asked was much better and I'd have to agree with you that those seem more like maintainence issues and it would make me lean toward overall bad boat. But if you said, Paints faded, oil stains here and there with no mention of oxidation, worn looking hoses/belts and green sludge I would say that seems normal of an engine room on an older boat. They maybe maintained just fine and are good motors.
The point is, provide detailed information in your question and get a detailed response, if not, expect additional questions before getting an answer. You wouldn't tell your Doctor my knee hurts, and ask how do I fix it without expecting him to ask a few detailed questions. It's the same thing here.
Stop getting your feelings hurt and taking offense to people asking questions and commenting about your posts, that's how it works. Everybody on here only wants to help, and I believe a few people on here are asking more detailed questions "to help" because they fear you don't know as much as you think you know about not only Hatteras Yachts but Big boats in general. Your all over the place with different types questions about multiple types of boats while boasting about what you know and what you've seen. Telling people you know more than most brokers and taking shots at people about their questions and responses all the while your the one asking for help. There's no need to be rude and condescending. From what I've seen this good group of Hatteras enthusiasts willing to help just about anyone. Does everyone joke around and take little shots at one another in good fun from time to time, of coarse, but I don't feel anyone ever does it with malice.
Like I said if you want help there's a ton of knowledge here, and most everyone including myself actually enjoys helping when I can and also getting advice and help in return. I've been boating my whole life and worked on boats most of it. I still learn something new everyday I visit this site, we all do. Good luck in your Hatteras Yachts puchasing quest, and hope you find your dream boat.
Tony

Well, if you don't have your heart set on a Hatt and like the Viking alternative, check out the one that's listed in Nashville. I hear it's nice, and the ask is less than the one you looked at in Texas.
