Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
I went to see this boat this past weekend. All I have to say is that I've been on quite a few boats and this thing was spotless and everything looked damn near perfect during my quick inspection. All systems where either original or done right.
This boat is definitely worth spending some time looking at if you are in the market.
The owner told me to post up the pictures I took, so here they are:

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Lets get real here, at 165,000 or more does the owner of this boat think someone's just gonna say yippee I won the E/bay game and plunk down the cash and drive it away. survey/sea trial and most important financing still needs to happen. Horrible time to sell anything

I just sold a Prevost bus on ebay about a month ago. The guy paid the deposit and then could not get financing. Later, another bidder called me direct and I ended up selling it to him. You just never know what can happen with ebay. I doubt you can get any better exposure for the price, however.

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Interesting. High bid is at $186,100 and still hasn't met the reserve. Maybe he'll have better luck with the Bayliner he has listed on eBay as well.
Turner, do you own these boats or are you a broker?

six hours left------i am a private party .

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Maybe we should all go in on her for a fractional ownership type of thing and leave her somewhere mid-coast.

A private party that uses "yachtgroup" as a username on eBay?
You getting any action on the Bayliner?
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Did you notice that "yachtgroup" has zero feedback? Not terrribly confidence-inspiring for such a high dollar item on ebay. Apparently it has not scared everyone because there are 7 bidders. Surely not all of them are Turner! If the reserve is $199k, it looks like it may sell!
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Nah man, that just means he's never bought or sold anything on eBay. At least you can click on his profile and see his picture. Woud you buy a boat from this guy?

This was listed earlier this week http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi..._id=74423&url=
The brokers website is also yachtgroupinc.com
I guess Turner's broker is trying ebay first.
If this doesn't work out, maybe I'll throw my offer in, but I know it will be below his reserve so why bother.

Things must be tough if yacht brokers have resorted to ebay. From what several brokers told me, the boats that were selling at the Lauderdale show were selling for 50-70% of asking price. With that in mind, $190k sounds not unrealistic for a $299k ask boat in this market. If the reserve is $199k I bet it sells.
Randy, LOVE the pic! ROFLOL

So Turner, is this really your boat?
If you're using a broker, why not dump him and save the commission? Then you could lower your reserve and sell the thing on eBay based on what we're seeing.
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
The bids keep getting lower. The first auction had no bids. The second reached $191,000 but the reserve was not met. The third reached $161,100 but didn't meet the reserve. And now this one only hit $135,100 with no reserve! Notice the added condition added the day before the auction closed.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987-...spagenameZWDVW.
Have prices gotten this soft or is this boat a victim of poor/over marketing?
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Why doesn't he just contact the bidder that was up to $191 and let it go? That's only $4k under his minimum.
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
I'm confused about a few things. It says the winning bid was $135,100 but I see the added bit about $195K as well. Seems to me that if the boat were offered with no reserve, the addition of the $195K minimum would not apply. Looks to me like Turner (or his broker) agreed to sell his boat for $135,100. The bidder could take him to court and win that one IMO.
In addition, the seller now shows 3 positive reports whereas when the boat was first listed, there were zero. Looks like the Bayliner is gone too. Nothing personal toward Turner, but this all seems a bit too strange. Maybe he'll come back and clear things up for us.

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
I would agree but I think it would cost more to file a legal action than the savings is worth. I was considering making an offer on this boat but the numbers I've been seeing make me wonder what any of these boats are really worth right now. How hard will it be for me to sell my '74 46SF even at a low price? I keep seeing asking prices that seem way too low, yet the boats still aren't selling. What is the bottom for an old sportfish when the new/newer ones aren't selling. I'm not looking at this as an investment but don't want to be stuck with 2 old boats that nobody wants at any price.
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Turner & I tried to see if we could work a deal. Krush was in MA, had some free time and checked it out for me. Krush's feedback was it's a nice boat.
I then went to the trouble of calling marinas for a place to park this machine. What I found was 60' slips are scarce or very expensive here in Connecticut. Then the stock market tanked, banks became loan adverse and I finally had to email Turner saying I was not in a position to make him an offer.
I hope the boat sells. (It will remove further temptation)

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
The NPV of boats in a Depression is near-zero.
If you think this isn't going to happen, you better go read http://market-ticker.org - today's entry (again) puts forward the mathematical certainty that approximately $12 trillion of supposed-GDP in fact was debt taken on during the last eight years, and all of this, plus the entirety of the bailouts (that's another $4 trillion thus far) will come out of forward GDP.
US GDP is ~$14 trillion; taken over 3 years this is a 35% decline anunally, or more than an entire year's GDP taken all at once.
That's worse than the 1930s folks, and the longer "bailout games" go on the worse it gets.
The mathematics are undeniable whether we like it or not.

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
I would have to disagree with you Karl based on the fact boats such as our's could easily be used as a primary, mobile residence. Quite frankly, if the ship really does hit the fan, I would feel much safer with my family aboard either of my fully provisioned boats while anchored out in the middle of a large body of water as opposed to living in a metropolitan area.

Ummmmm Randy,
We are in a very volatile Metro Area.... so Shush!!!!!
And we have over 1/2 tank of fuel... Off to sandy hook first!!!!!
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Randy, you're right to a degree, in that a boat is a dandy primary residence in a situation like this.
So is a travel trailer or RV, and is a hell of a lot cheaper to move over reasonable distances (even at displacement speeds.)
If your boat is for sale for the price of the trailer........
This is OT and I apologize for that; maybe I should split that part of the thread and move it to the Sandbar......
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Don't worry about going OT, it happens to the best of us. :D
Funny you should mention travel trailers as I just had a lady call about my 41 thinking it was one. http://www.samsmarine.com/forums/ima...s/rolleyes.gif
The beauty of a boat in troubled times is you can get away from the masses which is not the case with a travel trailer or motorhome which still has to be driven out of town. It's much easier to defend a motorized island.
-
Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Now back to the thread....comon, Jim. I could probably hook you up with a slip for the season. I could even get it down here for you, if needed....
Sorry for being so helpful...I'll go quietly, now. BUT, in a different time, a pretty nice boat for you, huh?
K :)

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
I can't see values dropping to zero because there will always be those of us who will find value in boating, and you need a boat for that. I have seen demand and prices go up and down many times before and I always kept on boating. The cost of ownership has gone way up, but if the demand for the boats decrease then so will yard fees. Marinas had waiting list but no more. 3 years ago Viking had a long waiting list for its sportfish, with the 70 footers being highest in demand. Last year they sold a handful of boats.
Through all of this, we keep on boating. Most of us won't sell our boats because of the high cost. We modify our useage and hope for better times. Most of those bailing out of boating aren't as hard core about it as we are. Boating boomed over the last decade because more and more people got into it and purchased some pretty big boats. Look at all the big Silvertons, Searays, Carvers etc. Those boats seem to be taking a huge hit right now because those are the buyers who have lost interest.
I'll keep my old Hatt going as long as I can and if I ever choose to sell her I hope it will be for another Hatt

Re: 55 Hatteras Convertible
Got to take exception to a bit of your post Salty.
You will NOT find more hardcore boaters that myself, my Admiral and our kids. Passage sold for top dollar in 2007, and we are waiting for the next ride. Bought my son a small jet boat last year and just sold that for a profit.
You probably will not find a more motivated buyer for quality vintage brands (Hatteras, Viking or Post only) than us.
I have good credit, good cash reserves, but I, along with others are reluctant to pull the trigger on a new/used boat util the bottom is revieled. I disagee with Karl in that I do not believe the NPV is zero. But I do believe it is 50% of peak 2004 prices. I'll wait until I see that.
WRT Turner's boat, back in Sept, he was pretty firm at $299k. No deal.
At $150k, I would cut him a check tomorrow.
