fuel consumption

I am looking at a 1989 45 convertible w/892ta's and I am wondering what the real numbers are on the fuel consumption, gph for combined motors? Thanks, Mike

1gal per mile at ten knots
45-50 at 15-17 knots
3-4 times the money to go a third faster.....

Just wondering doubleeagle, what kind of rpm are your running at your ten knot cruise? What temp does that give you? Any problems with carbon buildup or cycl wall fuel wash?

Im running 892s in my 52 sportfish roughly 350 hrs on rebuilds. Cruising speed 22 /- knots, 1900 rpms and 48 gals per hr.

That's about the same size boat as yours.... so it should be in the ballpark.

I will second Genesis's basic numbers. I have a 69' 45C with the older 8V92TI's at 550hp running N-70 injectors. I am running 2:1 gears with 29X31 4 bladed wheels. Speed curve is basically as follows:

1200 rpm 14kts 21gph (both motors)
1500 rpm 17kts 26gph
1800 rpm 21kts 31gph
2100 rpm 24kts 38gph
2330 rpm 26kts 45gph (WOT)

I have a friend with the 735hp 8V92's in a 46' and his numbers are about 2kts and 15-25gph higher throughout the range. I am interested in hearing what your boat runs as I haven't seen a new doublechine 45C with 8's only 6V's.

recently have been reading about the carbon and fuel wash problem...
not sure what to make of it ...since I have been running at 9-11 knots for about 4-5 yrs now,...
I am a 1972 58yf w/ stabilizers..
I usually run about 1200-1300 rpm's ..checked at the guauges at the eng room...
in a recent rend with all hatteras's I had the cleanest burning boat both at start and underway..
I have a little smoke [very little] after the boat has sat for week or more but when I run it every day I get no smoke at start or any soot on the transom..
I have been using lucas oil stabilizer in each oil change and have been using techno-403 as a fuel additive to remove water etc...also have algae -x units...
I recently put some J-B oil leak stuff in for the gaskets etc ..it stopped every little leak within 2-days running time...
put abotu a hundred hours per yr....change oil every yr

So long as you keep the temperature gauges in the normal range, all is ok. If they start dropping towards 150, and they will if you slow down too much, THEN you have problems.

I have 6v92 detroit diesels--oil leaks appear minor-approx 1/2 gallon per 70 hours enough to stain oil pads and create oil smell-disliked by "admiral" Would jb oil leak do the job. Is it likely to harm the engine or seals?

I am also interrested in the jb oil leak. Where can I purchase this and would it be OK to put in my 453 naturals.

I purchased the jb engine sealer at a local auto store, not a chain store . however you probably can find on line.
says it will not harm anything..sofar i;m satisfied ...you know how a little oil in the bilge looks like alot...
