Does anyone know the scoop on this 53 in Onekama, Mi Was pending. Back for sale?/
http://www.onekamamarine.com/boats-for-sale/1980-hatteras-53-motor-yacht-onekama-michigan-7966309/
About a month ago it was listed at $149,000, when I called it was already pending.
Now it's back up for $139,000.
Would anyone know what went wrong?

It has been on the market for a while (since Aug). I also would like to know what happened as I was looking at it. Do they sometimes post that sale is pending to generate interest? Does it indicate that sale fell thru?
Thanks

I talked to the listing guy and he told me there was a deal on it. He said the deal was for $135,000
So I am assuming something went afoul with the survey. That's what I would like to know.
Looks decent for the money.

Not a bad looking boat. Price is very low which tells me high engine hours, generator issues and or core issues. None of which were listed on the sale sheet.

That boat has been at Frankfort Municipal marina for years. It always looked nice but like it was never used or maintained. I doubt that it would not pass survey. It was probably some other reason that it didn't sell. It needs some work, but it has been freshwater for years and is probably in better shape than most.

Talked to the listing agent.
One motor has what is suspected to be a blown head gasket....
So the deal fell apart. They were quoted 20k to pull the motor and fix. Sounds like only about 5 k away from a full rebuild.
Any thoughts on cost to replace a head gasket if that is truly all that is wrong with it?
Thanks for the feedback!

On an 8v71, I doubt its a head gasket. Just figure on a complete rebuild when you make your offer.

That's what I am thinking too.
He did say it ran good still, ran 25 miles to where it is now, was leaking oil.
Some tractor mechanic looked at it, so the diagnosis is, well, you know..........suspect.

Could be nothing more than a plug in the head that has come loose and leaking oil. I've seen it happen before.

That would be a good thing.
Does oil flow through the head? I've done some motor work, but I'm no mechanic.

It won't hurt it as long as they keep putting oil in it.
Your other option is to get a real Detroit mechanic to survey the engines. Then you'll have some real information to base decisions on. But first I'd get an accepted offer at a reduced price. Unless, of course, you can get the owner to pay for the engine survey up front.
I remember it being a good looking boat. When the water was high, they scraped up the hull some because the pilings were too low in Frankfort.

I think we are going to go take a look Saturday. I will be picking up an oil sample kit from the local Caterpillar dealer and see what that says.
Thank you for all the input!

I bought the one in Onekama, I don't know about the other one, unless it was listed elsewhere with the lower price.

Well end the anticipation for us, what was wrong with the engine? It’s usually entertaining when a 25 year old road mechanic who’s somebody’s brother in law works on a marine Detroit.

I don't know yet...... I'm hoping it's just an oil leak. The oil samples came back really clean, no issues. I'm planning on just running it at this point. I was told they both ran strong on a 25 mile trip back to where it is stored for the winter.
I don't think there are detroit diesel mechanics in the area, so a better inspection will have to wait until I get it back to the detroit metro area.

There’s detroit mechanics pretty much everywhere, even 20 years into their all but dropping out of the marine market they’re still probably the most common engines out there. They’re not all created equal though, ask around and find somebody who everybody trusts and you’ll save yourself a lot of assache - I learned that the hard way. Multiple times.

Yes, I should be able to find one, better chance though once I get it local, or at least back in the water. Unfortunately it's on the hard now, so I think it has to wait until spring.

WW Williams in Grand Rapids will come up there and look at them. I would not run it until you figure out where/why you are losing oil.

I called them in June to look at a boat for me and was told they don't do marine surveys. They sent me a name and number of a guy that retired from there that is doing marine mechanical surveys on his own now. He did an amazing job!

Could you pass along to me his contact info? How much did he charge.
What I don't know is if this is something that can be looked at while on the hard, but I am sure he could answer that as well. I have been working under the assumption that it would need to be in the water so the motors could be run, but perhaps I should not assume. I'm thinking that if there is a leak, they may need to be run to witness the leak....
Thanks!

Maybe so, but the OP is looking for repair, not a survey.
