Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
One thing that allows me to get at least a wink of sleep is knowing that these engines have been dynoed.....that run...what keeps me from getting sleep is trying to make sure I hold up the other end of the deal.....getting everything else done!
I think she'll do fine. Soon I'll be making trips to meet all of you!
Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
I'm with Samidog, running 15-40 Shell Rotella T. Only 600 Hours on our 5.9 330B motors, but so far so good. I will look to see what brand of 15-40 the Cummins rep suggested when brand new, and also check the specs for changes, ( my guess is that the 250's interval is at least as long as the 330's). Also do you have 1.5 ZF trans? If so, I will look up the oil specs for them, and if you like can make/send you a copy of the manual. Best Regards, Bob K
Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
Got ahold of Carey's and they said 15w40 in both the engines and the trannies. That's convienient! Guess I'll run down quick tonight or tomorrow to drop some in before they seatrail her. Right now she's on empty.
Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
10:41pm and still no word from Jackman! We may never hear from him again as he just may never set foot on land again. Probably still out cruising.
Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
I'm jealous.....we are missing every target on getting back in the water, with no launch date in sight. :( Good luck on the sea trials, hope she breaks the sound barrier.

15-40W hope they are not ZF trannies!!!!
Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
This is great! Never had anyone so interested to hear from me! Not even my better half!
Here's the deal. They were ready to do the seatrial and an emergency came in....work boat engine had issues...most likely a crabber in this area...So my seatrial is tomorrow. They will take her out and check everything to make sure its to spec for the warranty. Sat AM my Dad and I plan on taking her to her slip from Leipsic De to Indian River Inlet, De ....what was about a 5.5hr trip with the 454's....we'll see what it will change to on Sat! No I'm not out cruising the hell out of my new engines...I'm still biting my nails and calling Carey's diesel a bazillion time to get an update.
Sat we also have to put up the enclosure and radar antennae...but for now...sh e's wet in the water, tied up to the dock. (We'll see if my retired t-hull glass/west system jobs hold up. Oh...have to install a new 3750gph bilge pump too! We lost one of the three.)
I'll post specs as soon as I have them. I'm betting the props will need adjusted....but we'll see. I still have some pictures but don't know how to post them.
Jack.....
Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
Glad to hear the news Jack. Get out and enjoy your new boat!
Jim, hope you get finished up and splashed soon!

Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
We went on a short ride yesterday with the owner of the company who is working with me on my repower.
All I can say is...do you remember the first time you went on a roller coaster and going down that hill the G's made your face peel back and you got a lump in your throat? I know my boat doesn't go that fast but I definitely felt the acceloration and the wake was 4-5 times farther from the back of the boat! She was screamin compared to the 454's. The drive train had absolutely no vibrations at all!
We had no electronics hooked up because we didn't want them sitting out in the open while the enclosure was not up so I cannot give any numbers yet...I can't even give RPMs because the wiring harnesses cummins gave us were the wrong ones. Apparently the new guage panels come with a digital hour meter and different tach. They sent us the old wiring harnesses so we are waiting for the new ones. (BTW if you're repowering now look into this before you install them. It will save you come time.) I could tell though, that we were in the upper 20's, probably about 27kts or so. I think we have some adjusting in the props to do but not a lot. Maybe adjusting the pitch by a degree or cup a bit. She definitely has tons of power and torque. Docking will be fun for sure. I just put the engines in gear a touch and was amazed at how much the boat moved...No delay in movement, that's for sure. When we went to go on plane there was a bit more of a delay then there should be so once we get the tachs working Mon or tuesday we'll be able to get a better answer as to what to do. I don't believe she's overloaded and not that far off...there was definitely no black smoke from overload....nothing as far as exhaust smoke. We can't be that far off.
Was very nice to actually get a ride in the water instead of a ride down I-95 to work on her. I'll lay out the specs as soon as possible for you all. I guarentee, after that ride, that they will be good!
Re: Jack/Orca's Repower Thread
Well....another update. They fixed the tach issue by installing the new harnesses and took her out for a ride and found that the engines were only doing 2395 rpms at WOT. Well...I then told them that I'd be down AM Sat to get the props I asked them to pull off and left it at that. Granted they were 21x23 cupped 4 bladers that I thought would have to be retuned to 21x21. On my way home from work the phone rings and its the guys at Carey's. He said Jack I have good news and maybe some very mildly bad news. The good news is that they checked the boat again before taking her out and noticed that when the throttle controls were pushed all the way up the throttles on the engine were not open the entire way! They adjusted the throttles and took her out to find that she could now do 2750!...The problem was the trim tabs weren't working right....which I knew about and they said the bow was way up in the air. They said with the tabs working they thought that I'd make the 2800rpms easy and I could do with what I got until fall when I could add some tip cup or take out some pitch to give myself some more rpms! They guys said the boat was simply howling and doing over 30kts easy. The thing was leaning to port because of weight or not being trimmed properly or something....but we'll see tomorrow! I have a new tab switch which I think is the problem because I was without a hardtop for a few months during the repower and there seems to be some corrosion on the switch. Also noticed there was not a full 12volts through the switch as though it had internal corrosion.
I could not imagine going faster in that boat than what I went last week. I simply don't need to go faster but now I have an additional 400rpms and that will be downright scary!
If things work out okay tomorrow we will be returning to our home slip next weekend. I want to finish all the tiny things that need to be done before I leave because I know once I get down there the work won't get done because all I'll want to do is fish and cruise!
