  1. Oil analysis

After a oil change, how many operating hours are needed before an accurate oil analysis can be performed? I'm starting to look for a new boat. I'm thinking most boats up North will have fresh oil as part of the winterization process.

  2. Non Bleach Mildew Buster

Anybody used this?: chompproducts.com/mildew.htm A recent article in USPS Ensign states that it's good stuff. But you have to order it which I hate (if it's so good why is it not on the retail store's shelf?). Responses are appreciated.

  3. Cadet Heat Registers

My '88 DC has 2 Cadet Heat (wall) Registers. From all appearances these seem to be OEM. They are not working. Only once about a year ago one came on and was shut off. Never could get it to work again. While the other (2) ships HVAC systems have satisfied our winter and summer needs it's time to...

  4. 46 Hatt Underway Video

A dockmate sent me this link to a short video he shot of our '83 46' Hatteras Convertible HP picking up and leaving the fishing grounds out of Ocean City, MD last summer. Not great but kinda cool so I thought I would share. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vesau3rJJ3E

  5. Leaking Check Valve

I have noticed lately that when I disconnect the hose from my fresh water inlet that drops of water will leak out. I'm assuming that the check valve needs servicing. Any thoughts? And how do I service the check valve? Thxs.

  6. Remove and replace strut, DYI?

I need to have my strut straightened. The yard that swapped props for me said that they remove the bent strut and send it out to be straightened at a local prop shop then remount it. Does this job require special skill or tools to get the shaft alignment correct? If it is as "simple" as...

  7. Unhappy Canvas collapsing under snow?

Hi Guys, Got a call from the Marina asking what I plan to do: they say that with a heavy snowfall the canvas enclosure over the cockpit risks collapsing. They've asked me to go there and take it down - something not easily done when overseas. I left it zipped up to keep water infiltration to a...

  8. Exclamation Converting to Propane Fuel???

I heard that there is now the technology to convert fuel injected gasoline engines or diesels to run on propane rather than gasoline. The idea first bothered me - to sleep on pressurized gas tanks - but at the same time I am guessing that the technology has be good enough to detect and prevent...

  10. Question Oil Leak at manifold/block gasket??

 I think I have finally located the leak that I posted about some time back. It appears to be coming from the gasket that seals the exhaust manifold to the block. Is this possible? It leaks only when underway. I was able to tighten up on the bolts a bit, but the leak continues. How big a job...

  11. Bennett t-tabs ram and trimdicators

Everyone that has complimented Bennett is correct. I bought a set of trim dicators a few years back and just got around to installing them. I was 20' short on the wire called Bennett and they sent me enough to complete the job. There was an invoice And I fully expected to pay for the wire. The...

  12. Remove Pulpit -PART1 (Long)

I’m sure there are variations in how Hatteras installs each bow pulpit but I thought I would document my project as a guideline for others with similar projects. Skooch is a 42 1980 LRC. I have measured the pulpit on several Hats and mine is the same size as the 70 MY, 53 MY, 58MY, all the LRC...

  13. Veneer choices

Question for the veneer experts on this forum... It appears that afromosia (and other wood) veneers come in two types - 10 mil paperback or 22 mil "bubble free". Other than thickness, what's the difference between these veneers and has anyone found one variety to apply easier or look better than...

  14. Icemakers, Part 2

My 26-year old ice maker finally bit the dust. I came home yesterday happy as could be after getting something for free from West Marine (fenders!), if you can believe that! I opened the ice maker and got that warm, fuzzy awe $hit feeling as steam rolled out it, instead of cold air and ice. I...

  15. Inexpensive (ie. under $300) 7x50 Binoculars

I am looking to buy my umteenth pair of 7x50 binoculars to carry as a spare. It appears that I am down to a pair of Fujinon ($185) and a pair of Steiner ($265). Assuming I want to stay in the $300 price range, does anyone have any suggestions for a pair of 7x50 binoculars. My cheapo Tasco's (OS 36...

  16. Not Winterizing

This year I am planning on leaving the boat fully commissioned. I'm using two liquid filled radiators (one in the engine room the other in the forward part of the boat). I'm leaving two hatches to the engines room open and both block heaters on (run by thermostats). The water lines will be blown...

  17. Coolant overflow bottles. Keep or ditch.

I'm thinking about removing the overflow bottles and just keeping the exchangers topped to about one inch of the top. The overflow hose can just be run into the bilge. I don't use antifreeze just the inhibitors that are not supposed to be toxic. Anybody see a problem with this. It would also...

  18. Am I doing this right?

We have run our 1981 48MY with 6V92 425 HP engines about 150 hours this past season, mostly at 1000-1150 RPM. Fuel consumption has been 5.7-6.5 GPH (including about three hours per day of gen set usage for cooking and house bank charging) which is why I'm running slow. Water jacket temperatures are...

  20. Classic Hatteras Values?

I'm new here, but not to Hatteras, having owned Hull # 10 1969 Sports Fish. I've done the search, I have access to soldboats.com, etc. My broker friend tells me the old boats in general are hard to sell, but I just happen to like the pre 1980 boats. Nothing looks better to me than that old picture...
