  1. Candidates for repowering and refurbishing

What series/models will make good candidates for rebuilding? I have 500k in cash and want a large boat for my wife and I to travel and live on 4 to 5 months a year. I have no problem handling a twin screw vessel in the 65' range, and want a boat with the room for two large staterooms with queen...

  2. IR readings

I have a pair of DD 671s N that I was curious if it would be an accurate reading of the engine tempertures if you shoot the sending units on the engine with a IR temperature guage. I did thiis the other day. Shot each engine at about the same distance on the top of the sending unit where the wire...

  3. Problems with Viking Yachts

OK, this thread may be a little odd for a Hatteras Forum, but I figure after 800 posts you guys will cut me some slack. I'll be looking at and early 80's 46' Viking soon. I heard they sometimes have issues with stringer rot and loose engine mounts. Has anyone here seen the problem first...

  4. Battery Smell

I've got 4 ,8-Ds (AGM) under my aft master stateroom bed that make up one bank of my inverter system. The other morning we woke up to a rotten egg stink after the generator was on and the inverter system was charging. I traced it to the batt'y box under the bed. Went thru 4-5 more charge /discharge...

  5. oil change question

I have always heated an engine up before changing oil, is there any real reason to do this? would seem better to do it cold since all old oil would have drained to the pan.

  8. Not zapped

In the course of doing some mid-job trouble shooting on the head install, we found several 110AC and a few 32 vdc breakers that are bad. Some are holding closed although open (welded contacts) and some are open while showing "on" with the knob. Are these breakers that prone to failure? One I...

  9. Looking at 56 Hat's 8V92's Problem??

We are looking to move aboard fulltime to a larger boat once all of our rental property in Melbourne, FL sells (which has slowed lately, very frustrating). We are currently on a 43ft Gulfstar trawler with twin 100hp Yanmars and burn a whopping 1.5gph total at 8 knots, and although it is great for...

  11. You seen this LRC rebuild?

This kingspoint guy is "rebuidling" a LRC in what looks like an attempt to "flip" it. I really don't understand how you can make money off of a depreciating asset in a soft market like this, but good luck to him! http://www.cleaniedini.com/Hatteras.htm

  13. Trim Tab Stuck..

Sorry for asking a dumb question - never had a boat with trim tabs before.. The SB trim tab is going down fine. How does it go back up? Does the pressure of the water push it up when I hit the up button while under way? The Port tab seems to be stuck (in the in /or "up" position). I hear...

  17. 12 volt fan with 32volt current

Has anyone ever tried replacing the 32volt blowers in the heads, engine rooms with par 12volt fans ? I suspect it might work ??? And/or is there such a thing as an inexpensive transistor/diode or other magic device to put in line to step down the current at each device ?

  20. rebuilding our 12-71s - photos

Well..., Covington Diesel (Wilmington) began rebuilding Miss Mary Alma's 12-71s a couple of weeks ago. The port engine has been broken down and the rebuild/reassembly on it is about 60% complete as of today. The camshaft on the port engine was bad, so it will have to be replaced. Other than...
