  1. refurbing the salon

Okay, we're looking to completely remodel our salon area of our 55' Convertible. Our problem is knowing what we can and can't do. It's an 85 and has no real dinette area. We'd like to add one, but is it plausible? What's there looks to be factory...but the previous owners had put in a HUGE teak...

  2. 8v71TI's white smoke under load

I'm usually running at 13-1400 rpm (1972 53 stretched to 61) and life is great. If I try to run at 1800 plus, I get persistent white smoke. It is not steam. What is the most likely cause?...Engines tach out off flywheels at about 2150 and I believe the fuel is 1.5 years old. This vessel is new to...

  4. Thru Hull and 1985 43 MY

Does anyone know how thick the hull is and if it would be ok to drill in the forward section of the hull? I'd like to add a 1 inch bronze thry hull up under the v berths in the boat but without drilling I don't know how long a fitting to purchase.

  5. Stretchy lines ???

Wow - A buddy of mine just checked on our boat (on the river in Cincinnati) after a huge windstorm, compliments of Ike, and said our lines had streteched and were actually dipping into the water on both sides of the boat. Boat's tied on 2 sides in our slip that's about 20' wide. I'm in Berlin right...

Hello all, The offer on a 1980 53MY was accepted pending Sea Trail and Survey. It's scheduled for next Tuesday. We (wifey and I) got the msot baot we can possibly afford and even this is a bit of a streach...so we can't afford to do any BIG repairs on her right away...and the price we negociated...

  7. Tank Vent Question

I was wondering if I should have increased the size of my fuel tank vent when I went from gas to diesel? I am thinking it may be possible to get water in my tank from water splashing if the vent size is too small...creating a vacuum effect and taking in water when waves splash against the boat. ...

  9. Repainting 41 DCMY

The 10 year old Awlgrip on our 41 has been very dull for a couple of years. It is time to repaint. I have painted her twice since we bought her in '81 and did all the prep work myself. This time I don't have time to spend the time, so I am planning to have a competent yard do the work. The...

  10. Tips and Tricks

    (1) In freezing weather, bring your compasses inside to avoid stressing the bellows. Most compasses fail in the spring after freezing weather stresses the flexible bellows and oil begins to leak. (2) To spruce up that old traditional black compass, polish the black surface with black PASTE...

  11. duck bills

I had my holding tank pump left on for days. The pump bellied up. I have new guts for the pump but I cant tell which way the duck bills should be put it. The old ones were mangled and seemed to me to be in wrong. Shouldn't flow be from wide part of duck bill to thin part on inlet and outlet? ...

  13. shaft alignment, flex couplings,...

We're hauling our 58YF next month for a bottom paint job and some other minor work (all DIY stuff). 14. 8V53N Low Oil Pressure

I have a set of 8V53s in my 1988 38 Convertible. Both run ok but the starboard one has much lower oil pressure, while the port seems very normal. Indeed, when at hot idle it gets to near zero, but does come up to 15-20 psi when at full throttle. I am in the process of doing a valve job on...

  15. Replacement engines

Anyone have any opinion on Perkins T6354 ?? Looking to replace our DD 671 in a 38' Hatteras DC/FB. Yes I know I will go at a trawlers pace, but I found the engine VERY reasonable and they will be a bit easier to get in the boat. DD have been fully broke down and only the blocks remain, so...

  16. GM 350 hp vs. Detroit 425 hp

I see a couple of 1980 53MY's with different engines... 350 hp. GM 8V71TI diesels vs. Detroit 8v71TI at 425 and/or 435 hp. Why the difference? (is the GM a replacement/upgrade?) What are the practical differences? Is there more demand for one over the other?

  20. GalleyMaid 32VDC Windlass not working

Last time I brought up the anchor, the windlass stopped working. No up, no down. And, it was not under any strain other than the weight of the anchor as it was coming up.
