  1. sea strainer sealant

Ok maybe this is a stupid question, but what sealant would you use on the cork gaskets on an older groco sea strainer that has plastic sight glass? I put it all together with permatex 2b, the shellac based sealer and now I have to use heat or alcohol to get it apart, bonded much too strongly to...

  3. 12 volt electronics panel

Has anyone added a 12 volt electronics breaker panel? I need to straighten out the wiring under each helm anyway and make sure everything is properly fused. I'd also like to have a master breaker at each helm to make sure everything is shut down. I have a Dataline X speed/temp display at each...

  4. 32 volt electronics breakers obsolete?

With all the conversion to 12 volt electronics over the years, I believe the electronics breaker box in my port engine room may now be obsolete. Is anything left on the 32 volt electronics circuits? Next weekend I'll shut them all off and take a cruise.

  8. Genesis - Heat Exchangers - It must be Synchronicity!

After posting yesterday about cleaning heat exchangers on my A/C units, I was over on Boat Diesel this morning just browsing through old posts (waiting for a "decent hour to head to the boat) and I came across your post of last year about cleaning heat exchangers. It was excellent and very...

  9. Testing Battery Charger???

I currently have a Heart Interface (now Xantrex) Truecharge 40+ charger on my two bank battery system (2-8D's in each bank). The charger has worked without a problem for the past 10-12 years. Two days ago, apparently one of the 8D's shorted out (3.5 years old) and the charger "cooked" it dry. ...

  10. Asbestos in Insulation?

Hey everyone. I was just under the galley in the gen space refilling my batteries in my 1971 58 yachtfish. That space has insulation on the ceiling which is made of fiberglass (about 1 inch thick) with a thin white fabric coating on the exposed side. The thin white fabric looks like it is some form...

  11. Aft Deck Rug Replacement

The boat came with a grey carpet covering the aft deck. I never cared for it and removed it, but the white deck shows dirt all too quickly. 1/2 inch thick teak flooring ripped into 2.2 cm wide strips held together with epoxy and 3/4" ss brads. A 4'x5' section weighs less than 20#. I am...

  15. King Starboard for ladder steps?

I need to fabricate some new step treads for an existing stainless steel ladder. The current steps are 21" wide by 7" and are likely plywood core with a pretty thin fiberglass shell. The ply is compromised so the steps are sagging in the center under even the smallest crew member. Rather than...

  18. Risers and elbows.

OK, I am not a salt water expert for shure. No one would ever change their risers and elbows in fresh water. Now that our 36 Hat is in salt water I am getting paranoid. Every time I start the engines, rusty water comes from the exhausts for about 30 seconds. Folks tell me that you need to change...

  19. 6v92 Guru help needed

Last week while transporting my boat from New Haven CT to Westerly RI, I noticed a fairly sudden loss of about 200 rpm on my stbd engine. This was about 2-1/2 hours into a 3-1/2 hour trip. I had been running at 2050, and had bumped it up to 2150 as I was fighting the tide and was trying to pick...

  20. Bottom layup

I would like to find out if anyone knows how Hatteras laid up their boats. After doing work to the bottom of my 58YF it looks to me as if the hull was laid up in a mold and when removed additional layers placed on the bottom. Would that be a good guess as to how it was done? I am also trying to...
