  1. Post Cork vs. Rubber Gasket in Perko Strainers

Hi All, I have a 493 - 3/4" Perko water strainer (1990) for my AC. I am replacing the cork gaskets. I received the correct size gaskets but wrong material- rubber. My strainers have cork gaskets. I noticed the rubber gaskets fit perfectly....no leaks! I called Perko and was informed that even...

  3. windows stuck closed after 24 years

The 2 sliding glass windows in my salon have never been opened since the boat was new. Unlike the previous owners, I prefer a bit more natural ventilation rather than running the A/C all the time. I have tried to open them with no success (they are really stuck) and am hesitant to use too much...

  4. gfi replacement

The factory installed GFI which services my galley and head occassionally trips for no apparent reason. I can't find anything in the wiring so I think its just an age thing. I know these don't last forever, and after 25 years I'd like to replace it. Question: can I just install an off the shelf GFI...

  5. winter battery maintainance & solar panels

Wondering if anyone has any experience with using solar panels to trickle charge batteries during the winter months? It gets really cold here in Canada and rather than lug the batteries off the boat I have four small solar panels (bought on sale) I'm thinking of attaching to my four batteries to...

  6. window frame restoration advice for 36' sedan

folks, I have black anodized (aluminum?) window frames on my 1986 Hat 36 sedan that are now quite faded, but the surface is still in good shape. Is there anything I can put on them to bring them back to life, either turning them black again, or maybe some kind of paint ? Thanks . John. M/V "at last"

  7. engine room paint color

My Hatt has factory "grey" in the ER, but I've noticed many of the pics on the HOF show white walls & floor in the ER. I like the white look and its likely very easy to see any leaks, spills etc .. but is it hard to actually keep it that white? Is the ER color it just a matter of preference, or...

  8. Unhappy which bottom paint should I use?

I suspect this may open a can of worms, but here goes. My freshwater Hatt (Great Lakes) has an epoxy barrier boat with Interlux VC 17 on it. I'm getting the boat ready to do the Great Loop which means changing the bottom paint for one that works in salt water. In talking with Interlux, nothing will...

  9. Advice on "lifelines", cockpit sunshade

Hi folks. I'm in the process of getting my '86 Hat 36 sedan ready to take on the great circle loop next summer. There will be lots of walking around the boat going through locks etc and having "lifelines" along side decks would be desirable from a safety standpoint. Has anyone seen this done...

  10. lightning protection

I'm heading to Florida next winter which I am told has more lightning strikes than other areas of the US, and I am wondering if Hatteras built any lightening protection into their boats in the mid 1980's. Forum searches reflect multiple threads where the whole issue of lightning protection is...

  11. twin disc MG506

I'm about to change the transmission oil on my twin disc transmissions (Cat 3208). I am unable to read the amount of oil and the oil viscosity on the transmission plates. I believe the oil viscosity is straight 40 weight. Can anyone confirm as indicate likely amount required as well? Thanks. John

  12. what is this ? Trim tab stuff?

Here I go again showing my lack of knowledge as I figure out the boat .... the attached picture shows a black box with an opaque bottom section located at the stern of my lazarette. I am wondering if this holds hydrolic fluid for my trim tab system, and how I service / maintain it? How to open it...

  13. need repair facility in Ft Myers

A fluid leak caused my port Bennet trim tab to collapse while underway. It looks like it may be bent, and will not move. 14. engine room access panels in salon floor

My engine room access panel in my salon floor is quite heavy, awkward to lift out to check my engines, and its a pain to put it somewhere while I head down below. 15. holding tank 3/4 full indicator light problem

Bought an 86 36' Hatteras Sedan this summer, and then noticed the holding tank indicator light in the head area indicating it was 3/4 full did not seem to operate. The tank must have been pretty fully as the season went on so I had it pumped out. Now the light is on and won't go off. I had it...

  17. Is factory bridge instrumentation weatherproof

I was wondering if the factory instrumentation on my 1986 36' sedan bridge dash is relatively weatherproof / waterproof. While I have a bimini and forward/side panels on my bridge, I prefer to run with only the top on. If I get caught in rain etc, am I risking making an mess of the factory...

Hi folks. My Hatt has the original 2 battery set up, one for the starboard engine and generator and one for the port engine and house use. On my upcoming loop trip, I'm wondering if my single port engine/house battery will be enough to run my Norcold fridge overnight while at anchor without...

  19. embarrassing transmission question

Can anyone help me identify the type of transmissions I have in my 86 36' Hatt?. The engines are factory installed Caterpillar 3208 turbos rated at 320 hp.
