  1. HELP! A/C Evaporator Icing Up

The evaporator in the aft stateroom on our 43' DCMY is icing up. The compressor is a relatively new Cruiseair 16,000 BTU unit with SMX digital controls. It cools both the aft and forward staterooms. Only the aft stateroom evaporator is icing. There is a separate compressor, evaporator and controls...

  2. A Repower Story, DD 6-71 to Yanmar 6LY3-ETP

I have a 1988 38C that I run in Hilton Head Island for fishing charters. For the past five years I had 6-71 TIBs and while they would always get me back, sometimes slower than I would like :(, smoking like crazy, in the far recesses of my mind, I was always waiting for that castrophic breakdown...

  3. How long do your zinks last?

I get about 3-4 months out of a set shafts and rudders. I don't have any other boats with in about 100yds of me. I did have a friend that had a old concorde who would tie up at the house next door and I would loose my zinks in 3 weeks when he was there. He had a inverter and when you touched...

  4. Considering a 1976 42' Hatteras

Good morning everyone, I am considering the purchase of a 1976 42' Hatteras Convertible. I am presently getting out of a 1936 36' Chris Craft, and am new to this Fiberglass thing. If I were to purchase the boat I would of course get a full survey of both the boat and the engines. The 671's...

  5. Bottom Job

I'm thinking about taking my bottom down to bare glass and doing the barrier coat thing. I very much doubt that it's ever been done in her 35 years. Suspecting that this will not be cheap, I'm considering the purchase of a blasting setup and doing it myself. Would anyone care to weigh in on...

  6. Fuel burn at hull speed

Hi all Just trying to get a good estimate on average fuel burn at hull speed or most economical speed, which I assume would be hull speed. The yacht we are leaning toward is a 53EDMY or a 53 yachtfish. So any data on those two Would be great but any data on anything over 50 would help...

  7. Oil consumption increasing

I am seeing an increase in oil consumption on the starboard 6V92 TA. Used to be I could run 20-30 hours before it needed one pint right after an oil change and then the consumption would gradually increase to a pint in 10 hours after 170 hours (Yes, I know 150 hour changes are recommended but it...

Remove my big red CO2 tank from my boat myself? I searched this site and found some great information in previous posts, but I'm still kinda leary about doing this myself. Plus, what do I do / how to get rid of / the tank and associated stuff? Yes I have read all the discussions pro and con...

  9. critique these engine rooms (via pics) :)

These are from one of the 58' YF I am looking at. Price seems reasonable and the interior shots looks like it has been cared for and updated but the engine rooms somehow look a bit messy to me but what do i know! What the heck is the big red thing in this first picture??? It's in the starboard...

  11. Electric at your marina: How much are you paying?

We're trying to get an idea about whether our power is high or normal. We're paying $0.21 per kilowatt hour at the marina. Home is $0.14 including everything. It's kinda crazy, our power bill for the boat was over $300 last month. :(

  14. Who has the best prices on marine electronics

sooner or later (probably sooner) I'm going to have to buy some electronics. mainly a good GPS/chart plotter and a good sounder and a radio. I feel it's all a big rip off anyway but in the end you always get what you pay for. So, with all of it said who has the best prices? I like Garmin 3210c...

  15. Question V-12 vs. V-6 Fuel Consumption at displacement speed

Hi folks, I'm toying with the idea of converting a larger old Hatt into a displacement boat. Some are to be found with 6-V71Ns, others with 8-V71Ns, yet others with 8-V71TAs and yet a few with 12-V71Ns. Some have been converted to 6-V92TAs or Cummins 6CTAs each boasting better fuel economy...

  16. Engine room air vent size

I got a real education on adequate vent size to feed high HP diesels at the boat show. The 8v92 pulls over 800 cubic feet per minute for a natural aspirated engine. I am trying to calculate the air draw for turbo charged engines. it would appear that a turbo would double this requirement. Does...

  18. Blown fuses.

Those of us that are lucky enough to have those stupid fuses to protect our shore power inlets are tearing out what little hair we have left. Our '86 36C, "Unity", blows them on the AC line like popcorn. We switched to the slow blow ones and that has helped. Now that our boat is in Florida, we need...

Feeling a twinge of guilt for hijacking the racor thred, I thought I should start a new one... to wit: I am about to embark on an entire fuel system cleaning, and I dont mean just the fuel. After two hours on Lake Michigan on 2-3 footers, the crap in the bottom of my tanks loosened up rather...

  20. Yep, need a different anchor!

Anchored at St Michaels for two days with a fresh breeze. Anchor (oem Danforth-type). Seemed to hold fine for two days but yesterday, while diving the boat I suddenly found that I could stand up in the water and see above the swim platform! Turning around I found that we were within 6-8 feet of...
