  1. Raw Water System Flush - Phosphoric Acid - My experience

A Phosphoric Acid solution worked well for me in flushing the raw water systems for the Detroits, generator and AC. Engine operating temperature dropped roughly 30 degrees and sea water flow through the generator doubled. I had concerns regarding acid concentration and checked the MSDS for...

  2. DD fresh water pump

Is it possible, or advisable, to swap the seal in the water pump in place on 871? Got a weep out the hole under pressure, no weep without pressure but either way the writing is on the wall. If the pump can remain in place it will be a whole lot less work and no worries about gear lash setting.

  3. WOT 6V92’s realistic cruising speed ‘81 43c

Our 1981 43’ convertible w/hardtop is powered with twin turboed 6V92’s and I am wondering what the WOT RPM should be under load. Also I run about 15kts with 7/8 full of fuel at 1880-1900 RPM’s depending on sea conditions. Are those figures I should expect? She is a heavy old girl and we love her....

  5. SIMRAD Auto Pilot Novice Question

Ok so my boat has an older model SIMRAD auto pilot on board. I have never had a need to use it and don't foresee a need to use it anytime soon but was curious to know if it's in operating condition. I powered up the control but didn't realize it was on because the display is toast and very...

  6. Dripping shaft, how hard of a job

One of my shafts is dripping, when the boat is sitting there it is 1 drip per 5 seconds, while I am going it is about 1 gallon per hour. I have searched the forum and done some youtubing. Is this the type of shaft that I could change the packing myself while it is in the water? I am pretty freaked...

  7. I just need 2 more inches.....

No, not that kind. I just need to tighten this line 2 more inches, or 4 or 6 Does anyone make a device that will attach to a line and tighten it a little? In the chain world I think they call them chain binders and have different styles, with hooks on both ends and either a lever you pull and it...

  8. Aft cabin shower sump and toilet failure

The picture shown is the plate in the aft head where you can turn on the shower sump/bilge pump and the toilet. For some reason yesterday, both stopped at the same time. No lights come on nor does anything happen when I pull out the knobs. Please note that they’re on separate circuits at the...

  10. Identify Hailing Speaker Please...

1986 54 MY...had two of these hailing speakers up front above the pilot house. They appear to be original to the boat or at least from that time period. I can't find any identifying markings on them. Does anybody know the manufacturer ? One came off at sea and I'd rather retain the original mount...

  11. Fender attachment points

How I learned to stop worrying and love the heavy aluminum rubrail. Forgive the poor paraphrasing from Dr. Strangelove but the aluminum rub rail really does have that type of mentality associated with it. Great utility can be had by tapping and threading in these 6mm D rings by Wichard. They are...

  13. Coolant recovery tank install

I'm exploring the possibility of installing recovery tanks on both engines. My main questions I'm yet to resolve are location, and within that physically mounting the tank. I don't see any pictures that give me any clear insight when I search online. I'm making an assumption that the hose...

  14. Engine Room Receptacles

There is an electrical receptacle (plug in) located just inside each engine room door on my 1985 Hatteras ED. They do not have power to either of them. The lights come on in the engine rooms, so I must be missing a breaker somewhere that needs to be flipped on. Any help would be great.

  18. Side walkway deck drains clogging due to paint scraping

I had some guys working on the boat for the last few days. They were scraping paint from the underside of the covered walkways around the salon.
