  3. improving cockpit deck hatch design

if your boat has loose hatches in the cockpit or aft deck then you most likely can relate to this. my hatches are not hinged and sit in a recess in the deck that doubles as a rain gutter. first problem with this is the loose hatches, if you took a large enough wave over the transom or side the...

  4. When is it time to replace shafts?

I'm having a strut replaced on my '74 36C and an engine mount on one of the Cat engines. Both shafts have been pulled, original 1 1/2" diameter. The yard thinks I should replace both shafts. Both show some pitting and wear marks where they go through the cutlass bearings on the struts but...

  5. 12v92 dual racor filters

My boat is set up with dual racors, each with its own valve. I think it is supposed to be so you can switch to a clean filter while underway. The previous owner has been running them both open, basically dirtying both filters at the same time. Does the 12v92 draw so much fuel as to require two...

  6. Bio-Fuel

Speaking with a local fisherman/shrimper who has a reputation for being ahead of the curve in the business, he was telling me about this Bio-Fuel. He buys it and mixes it with his regular diesel and swears that his engines run better, the filters need changing less, and is saving huge bucks. ...

  7. March AC pump motor freezing up

I have an AC-2CP-MD March on my Cruisair AC system which has a stiff motor ( wet end off, spinning the magnet cylinder by hand). The original symptom is that on ocassion the pump will not start spinning. A total replacement will be very painful due to the location. I notice two oil holes in the...

  8. Roll and Tip Easypoxy

So I attemped to start painting last weekend, with poor results. I followed the instructions, and since it was warm out, did not thin the paint. I used a low nap foam roller, (West systems Rollers actually). I rolled on, it left alot of air bubbles and then tiped with a nice brush. The paint...

  10. So why the Detroit hate?

When I bought my 46 Bertram in 02 I found an old school old guy mechanic. One thing I remember him saying is these will still run hurt better than other engines will healthy. And my 8-71TI's were tired, made a massive smoke show starting in just a Florida winter, Yet still made good power. Anyway...

  11. MerCruiser Fuel Pump Replacement

What's the difference between a OEM MerCruiser mechanical fuel pump that's well north of $200 and the Carter M60601 (that Mercury references as being the pump) that can be had for about $90? I know there is a return line that dumps fuel into the carb when the diaphragm goes bad (instead of...

  12. using32v wiring to run 12 volt stuff

Guy on my dock with a 53 told me he was swithching out his 32 volt for 12. I indicated that would be a big job what with pulling all the 32v wiring. He said not "I'm going to use the the 32 wiring to run all the 12 volt except the engines". I'm not a electrician but it seems to me that except...

  14. Acrylic escape hatch replacement

On our 1979 MY we have two acrylic escape hatches in the stern. The acrylic is not as clear as I would like and no matter how much I've tried to polish them out they are not as nice as I want them. Question, has anyone ever replaced just the acrylic? If so how hard of a job is it? Thanks in advance.

  15. 240 volt from two 125’s using a splitter

Staying in Montauk NY for a month and having a real issue with my electrical power needs. Marina has mostly 125v 30 amp power towers. The few 50 amp towers only produce about 200 to 210 volts on my panel and a/c units shut down flashing low voltage . I purchased a Hubbell splitter with the box that...

My friends at "Ideal" are on vacation and I am trying to remove the drum and wildcat from very old vertical windlass before the sun goes down. 17. Detroit 671 Raw Water Pump rebuild, replace, or Korean

I have water leaking out of the stbd 671 ti raw water pump. I have not yet pulled it but am suspecting it will need to be rebuilt or replaced. 18. 8D battery cable size

Looks like I have a corroded end of one of my battery cables to my port engine. The terminal that attaches the cable to the actual starter motor is corroding off the end of the cable. Any experiences with a 6CTA powerered 52 or 53 convertible? I tried to find performance numbers on Pascals 53 MY but couldn't find anything, only that he was happy with the repower. Plan on traveling 75% of the time at hull speed.

  20. Grounding question for the experts

This is sort of boat related. I get conflicting view points on the best solution. My house was built in 1959 and the electricians were creative. I have found a few places where they used the ground wire for neutral and all the grounds and neutrals are tied together at the same block in the panel....
