  1. In-frame rebuild guote and questions

I just received a quote from a local Detroit shop for an inframe overhaul of our 12-71TIs. The quote was $34,300 for each engine, which includes an estimate of $11,200 labor for each engine, $4,060 for rebuilt heads and $1,200 for rebuilding the turbos. Does this sound about right for such a...

  2. Exclamation Blister Repair

There are many posts here on blister repair, many of them NOT FACTUAL. That is, much of the information is inaccuarate!! There is only ONE way to insure a bottom is ready for repair after stripping, blister removal, or whatever: a moisture meter. Hotvac, while a potentially accelerated way to...

  3. Feeling "GASSY"

So, like now I am on a new quest. I went to the GAS boat the other day, and went through some systems. The gas onboard, about 75 gallons, went in around Sept of '05. The tanks are Chris Craft galvanized steel with copper lines. I am thinking about changing the filters and priming them 1/2 with...

  4. Galley Maid water pump won’t shut off

New boat, owner is learning about all systems. I ran my water tank dry this morning. Shut the pump breaker off and refilled. Purged lines and now the pump won’t shut off. Any ideas for my next step?

  5. Three Conductor Shore Power Cord

I just replaced another shore power cord using 6/3 instead of the normal 6/4. My boat like most Hats has transformers so the neutral from the shore supply is not carried on to the boat. You wouldn't think deleting one conductor would make that much diffrence but it sure does. The 6/3 is smaller in...

  6. frameless windows

Do any of you have experience with frameless windows on older boats made for frames? My 45c Ser II has the original factory setup -- slider windows on the salon sides, smaller fixed quarter windows leading to the 3 fwd salon windows. My slider frames are about ready to be replaced. I've already...

  7. Recommendations for Galley Maid head replacement

I don't want to start a peeing contest with the die-hard Galley Maid fans, but I am interested in some constructive input. I have three GM heads in my boat, and all of the pumps and valves (+/- 20 years old) are exhibiting varying degrees of external corrosion. Seems the PO didn't pay these much...

  8. 3126 Caterpillar pros

I'm looking at a 1997 42' Hatteras CPMY with 3126 Cats. I've read the threads that are critical about them. I'm wondering if there are any experienced owners of the same era 3126's (not the later model "B") who have something positive and encouraging to tell me about them or is all the news bad?...

  9. Radar - Dome vs Open Array

I trust the open array provides better performance, but I wonder how much. Is it worth the added cost and space? I have Garmin 4212 and 4012 plotters on a 43 DCFB and would like to add radar. I assume I can just plug in. It is tempting to just follow the GPS plotter, in bad visibility,...

  10. The deal of the century......maybe !!

Hi All, Here's a story related to me by an acquaintance who I feel is reputable however I can't confirm the facts. This acquaintance of mine and his good friend recently came into a ton of dough. They both decided to look for new boats (used 50'-80'). I of course suggested they look at...

  11. 1981 Hatteras 56 MY- How badly does it need Niad stabilizers ?

Seems like a pretty tall boat that would greatly benefit from Niads, even in the ICW if conditions a little rough or dealing with wakes from other large boats. What say ye ? Cost to retrofit new stabilizers ? From a quick search, at least $55K including install/yard time.

  12. 6-71 Fuel Pump Problem

Passages got splashed today and I immediately set about coaxing the engines back to life. :) Port engine would not fire. Spins freely but not even a hint of firing. Air-Seps are clean. Fuel Tank was at 1/8 but I added another 15 gallons of fresh stuff. Disconnected the primary filter output...

  13. Blower motor of AC goign bad

After 8 years, the blower motor of the Ocean Breeze 16500 BTU unit has lost some bearings. It is making a loud noise when it runs. I checked the cage inside the housing and it is clean, not rubbing against anything and it is not loose. I called ocean beeze. They told me that I can't just...

  14. Redoing the wood paneling in main slaon

I am pretty handy but was wondering what would be the best way to change the look of my 1987 55C salon and get a nice darker look on the wood or perhpas a tiger maple or something exotic. Is it possible to apply a veneer to the existing paneling - which by the way is in excellent shape? Thoughts...

  16. Palm Beach Style

I am looking at new Helm Consoles for the boat and a few of them have Palm Beach style Helm Pods on them. I am not sure if we are going to decide to have one of these, but I was woundering how the controls are set up. Since I have not had ocasion to look closely at a boat that had the side...

  17. Appropriate Antifreeze for Detroit Diesel

I know this has been discussed before, but the search function only gave me Nalcool and Power Cool. Other options with low silicates are available. I saw Prestone Dex Cool at Wally World. The label said safe for GM gas & diesel engines but wanted to check with the group. What brand labels...

  18. Down Goes Woodie, Down Goes Woodie

Sorry to say, but this is a very recent video of a 55' Chris Craft Constellation the "Pizzaz", a wooden hull, sinking in Lake Michigan off Little Sable Light West of Grand Rapids. I say wooden hull, because it clearly appears to be so in the video. I posted about this before, i.e. pretty paint...

  19. What is with the dislike of Detroit diesels??

Over the weekend I found myself at the hull truth. When searching around I came across many negative comments for DD. Poor fuel consumption, noisy, scarce parts for some engines. Is this because they are comparing new technology with older technology. It seems from some posters point of view if it...

  20. Proper coolant for 3208 CATs

I need to change out the coolant in my 3208 CAT's which have done quite well with Dexcool in the last 5 years. I'm not sure that something else would work better. Dexcool was (or still is) a GM product with ethylene glycol. Prestone's "Dexcool", when you call Autozone or Advance Auto, does not say...
