  7. 6-71 coolant loss

Right off, let me admit I have an Ocean, not a Hatteras, but the Ocean owner's group is non-existant, and you guys are my only real hope. I just bought the boat and brought it from Virginia to Florida. Third day of the trip, we noticed low coolant level in the starboard engine. Replaced the leaking...

  8. Recommendations for Galley Maid head replacement

I don't want to start a peeing contest with the die-hard Galley Maid fans, but I am interested in some constructive input. I have three GM heads in my boat, and all of the pumps and valves (+/- 20 years old) are exhibiting varying degrees of external corrosion. Seems the PO didn't pay these much...

  9. 2-Cycle Customer/Mechanic class

Detroit Diesel is offering this class in June. Has anyone attended this in the past? I'm curious to know if it is geared heavily toward the 6-71's and variants, or does it cover a wide range of engines? I'm interested in attending if it's pretty specific to the 6-71's I have, but not so much...

  10. Raw water pump zinc question

I have 6-71 TIB's in the boat, and recently pulled the raw water inlet and outlet pipes off for cleaning and repainting. I replaced the large zinc and when my mechanic saw it while doing some other work, he advised that I should not use zincs on the raw water pumps. He suggested removing the...

  11. 6-71 pencil zincs - what sizes?

Pulled a couple of the pencil zincs last weekend, one from the heat exchanger (J&T model, not the DD model) and from the oil cooler. Both are the same diameter, but they were so far gone it was hard to tell what the original length was. Didn't pull the larger zinc on the block, because I knew I...

  12. Lifting 8D batteries

I have been thinking of replacing my fairly new 8D's with AGM batteries, but then I saw the price for those babies. Must have replaced the lead plates with gold. However, when it is time to replace them, is there an easy way to grab them to lift them? Mine sit down inside a "well" with very little...

  13. Any experience with Lifeline AGM batteries?

I need to replace my two 8D's, and am considering going with AGM's instead of flooded this time. I've read good things about Lifeline, and wonder if anyone here has any first-hand experience with them, good or bad.

  14. A/C strainer question

I leave my boat closed up during the week, and I'm too chicken to leave the A/C on. I've been told that bromine tablets in a turned-off system are not good. I've also been told that putting a couple strips of copper sheet in the strainer IS good, in that it will help prevent growth of crud in the...

  15. Amp Clamp recommendations

I'm looking for a DC amp clamp and am looking for some advice. Those of you who use these regularly, would I be better off with a larger amp capacity that reads down to 100 milliamps or so, or a smaller, maybe "mini" meter, with a much lower capacity, but able to read down to 1 or ten milliamps?

  16. Rope/chain rode

Anyone have personal experience with a rope/chain rode, or are you all either/or? My windlass lacks a wildcat and the PO used all rope with about 6 feet of chain. I now have 50' of chain and the balance rope, but am still trying to decide whether to modify the windlass to accept both, go to all...

  17. J&T 6-71 Heat Exchanger

I want to order some end plate gaskets for my HX but didn't realize there are so many different diameters available. I can't get back to the boat till this weekend. Does anyone know what diameter the end plate is on the HX used by J&T on a 6-71 TIB? Looks like Lenco and SenDure both have the parts,...

  18. Hard top builders in east Central Florida

We are getting some quotes for a replacement bimini and sides, and I'm wondering if a hard top might not be a smart alternative. Is there anyone in the Central east coast Florida area that builds these? We have visions of someday doing the loop, so air clearance might be an issue, but I can decide...

  19. Razor clams in the A/C system

I may not have the name of the critters right, but I had a tech at the boat today to check the A/C out before the summer heat gets here, and he recommended putting one or two bromine tabs in the A/C raw water strainer to keep the critters at bay. I leave the boat closed during the week, and the...

  20. Rule bilge pump question

While rooting around in the bilge during my battery system re-wiring project, it occurred to me that of the various bilge pumps, I have two Rule 2000 gph (model 53S) pumps, but both are wired through a rule switch. These pumps are the automatic ones that come on every once in a while, sense water...
