  2. 15W-40??? Isn't that problematic in DD 8-71s?

I have a yard with Hatteras experience saying they use 15W-40 in DD 8-71's. They say they never heard that DD should be Straight 40. Should be Straight 40 with low ash, correct? Like Shell Rotella SAE 40 T1. Not 15W-40T4? FYI- They also said 90 weight gear oil in the Alison. I know...

  3. Fiberglass Muffler Repair

With the long lead times for a new unit, I decided to pull the muffler and repair. The tower portion of the muffler appears to be adhered to the base plate, then screwed to the plywood shelf/floor in the engine room. Has anyone had to repair a similar muffler like this? If so, what adhesive is...

  4. Generator Fuel

Can anyone confirm for me that the generator for a 74 Hatteras 46C pulls fuel from the centerline tank as opposed to the port or starboard saddle tanks? Thanks

  5. Some almost complete spring projects

I've had some time to work on some projects this spring and thought I would post some photo's for anyone who is interested. First ie some engine room cleanup and the making od a plywood cover between the two gas engines (covering the two battery boxes.

  6. Ladder back hardware

Hey gents, I’ve always loved the mahogany or teak ladder back helm chairs you see on sportfishers and have a fair degree of competence working with wood so would like to try crafting a few for my bridge. The one thing I can’t seem to find is the hardware attaching the ladder back to the seat. You...

  7. Brower Hydraulic Davit

I am looking at a used Brower 1500lb hydraulic davit to replace the old Marquip 1k electric davit for my 60c. I'm having a hard time finding any information on them since Brower went out of business. It does not come with a pump since the boat it came off of had full hydraulics so at minimum would...

  8. Help with screw/fastener type for this part.

Can anyone help me out with this (See photo above). There is a flange (or bracket) that slides along the vertical pole on the bow pulpit. It connects to the teak handrail to secure the rail to the pulpit. I noticed that there is a hole where some sort of bolt or fastener goes in. At first I...

  9. Inverter install

Eventually the SB side will convert to 24V, and as components need replacing they will be moved from 32V to 24V (The phased in approach). In the meantime, not wanting to run the Genny unless needing Air Conditioning I wanted some form of inverter to power the fridge when on the hook, and the 12V...

  10. 60C Ladder upgrade

Airpilot just upgraded his ladder to the bridge on Melodie. I helped him reinstall it and snapped a few photos. He wanted to get rid of the teak treads but the starboard seemed to flex too much so he had a machine shop brace them with stainless channel. I think it came out pretty nice and I like...

  11. Port stuffing box on Hatteras 40DC

Closing on our "new to us" Hatteras 40DC early next week. One of the first things we will address is the port side stuffing box. There is a fair amount of corrosion around it, to the extent that it could not be observed during survey. The mechanic that works on the boat wants to just do an acid...

  12. Gas Explosion in Muffler

We finally got our boat ready to fish, so I took the family down to the boat to clean her up and meet a carb guy to adjust the ratios on the Rochester's (they were running a bit rich after a recent rebuilds). I was starting up the stbd engine to warm her up and, mistakenly, gave it one too many...

  13. Hynautic H42-04 steering helm drawings

G'day HOF members, I'm trying to locate some detailed drawings of a Hynautic helm pump, model H42-04. Mine is really clunky and only work to port side after being serviced here in Australia and my hydraulics guy thinks the pump has been previously rebuilt incorrectly by previous owner and we...

  14. Village Marine Water Maker

The circuit board on my Village Marine Water Maker seems to have died. The screen will not respond. Villlage Marine says they don't make those circuit boards anymore. Does anyone (i) know of a work around; or (ii) have a used one? Thanks Bruce Freestyle 1986 62cpmy (54MY with ext)

  15. Rust on stainless (cleats, fittings, etc)

I've used Colinite Metal polish on some of the stainless fittings on the front deck (cleats, etc). They looked great for a few weeks but are not starting show moderate surface rusting. The fittings I didn't clean are still fine, although they could use cleaning. Is there something I should...

  16. Out with the old......

Yanked the 4 8V batteries (one with a bad cell) out today. They actually were not as heavy as I thought they would be, which means there's less lead in there which means they were not the best and that's why they only lasted 4 years. (Plus the murderous charging profile compliments of the Sentry)...

  17. Generator fuel line pickup

1973 38’ FBDC - Is the generator fuel line pickup in the port tank higher than the engine pickup? The generator is not getting fuel from a tank with about 1/4 full. Engines work fine.

  18. Captain Billy Black and his 50 Hatteras

I randomly found this YouTube video about Captain Billy Black who was the ‘house’ captain for almost 30 years at Walker’s Cay in the Bahamas. One thing that really stood out is that he repowered from the original 8V71’s after 60,000 hours (not a typo) which he estimates as 600,000 nautical miles! ...

  19. Adding 3rd 30 amp service

I am in the process of enclosing the aft deck so it can be air conditioned. It will only be used while at the dock. The current AC inlet powers 2 self contained (16K ,9K) units. Pedestal setup is 50 splitter into 2 30amp and it has an unused 30 amp socket. Can I just run a separate 30amp cord...

  20. 70 Motoryacht - Mechanicals under the Floor

I am in the process of searching for a new used Hatteras MY in the 60-70 range and have inspected several already, all of which were late 1980s boats. We love the layouts, old classic lines, and of course the quality of construction these boats have. My concern on all them so far has been...
