Knowing this might influence my decision to purchase a 61 MY or a 58 MY. All things being equal, would it be cheaper to rebuild a set of 8-92's or a set of 12-71's?

Again, all things being equal, which rebuild is going to last the longest?

With all things equal 8 is less than 12 for parts and labor.

Longevity is another story as hp per cid and how they will be run is a factor.

They would be run the same....which is at a slow cruise with an occasional run up to blow out the cobbs.

I would not be afraid to own the 8v92 boat, but I am partial to the 12v71's if I had my choice.

8v92 will be cheaper to rebuild. I have a pair of 8v92ta in my 52c. Great motors very happy with them.

How about fuel burn for my style of cruising? Normally slow with an occasional bump up to blow them out.

The boats are only three feet apart so an 8 vs 12 variable should be significant information.

The fuel burn should be about the same for a given speed on the same boat with the only variable being 8V92 vs 12V71. It will take the same amount of HP to push the hull so the only real difference will be seen at high planning speeds. There should be a slight difference with the 12V71s at speeds above hull speed due to the added weight and larger running gear.

It seems to me that the exhaust on my 1271s was noticeably louder than my 892s.

I had never owned any thing larger than a runabout when I purchased my '82 56' 6 years ago, so I was very much intimidated by the 12 cylinder engines (cost wise).

While my 8 92s have treated me wonderfully and I like them and they've been reliable, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't let 8 vs. 12 be a deciding factor. I'd buy the boat I liked the best.

Theres something about those 12 cylinders that just feels good!

Good luck with your call...
