I decided that I could wait no longer to replace my stbd shaft log hose. It was showing its 32 years. I replaced the port hose in 06 and knew what I was in for. After about 15 man hours it is done.

here is the top of the hose. As bad as it looks, it was a job cutting it off.

Takes time when you do things the right way. At least you don't have to explain to a customer why it took 15hrs to change a hose. I've been lucky. I replaced mine when I put new shafts in the 46 and the 65 has newer dripless shaft seals. I hope you're giving yourself a good deal on your rate!

The dripless manufacturers recomend you change the hose every 5 years or so.

Dave I will say you got your moneys worth out of the old one.

I think my next haul I should do mine too. I know their not original as I have 1 3/4 shafts in a 1966 41C.

While I'm at it Ill pull the strainers, through hulls, valves and associated gear and replave with new and improved wedge strainers and propper seacocks.

I think I need to do that to get to the shaft logs anyway.

Did you have the shaft checked for cracks and see if its true?
Are you having the props re tuned?
Did you check the bedding on the struts and condition of the cutlass bearings?

Remember yous never make a living fixing boats if you dont sell up on the services :)

I had the props done to class 1 using a prop scan shop called Coastal Prop in 2005 and they are still smooth.
Checked the keyways for cracks
The shaft is true
I used the Buck Alqonquin special shaft log hose and ABA 316 clamps
Repacked the log with new GFO packing

I also planned the haulout for this time of year so it would be cool to work. I sure got my wish there!!

Did my last one between xmass and nye. Same reason. The downside was short days.

You won't get any sympathy here. Try coming up here and working on a boat right now. Those hot FL summers don't seem so bad right now!

Is there a law against moving south. No. Is there a reason not to. ? I cant think of one. Then again if everyone from up there came down here it would be full of foreigners. Like France.

dave, i see where you had to correct steve d'antonio in professional boatbuilder magazine(good job) i wouldn't want to run a 35 knot sportfish at 50% in reverse as he states.

Steve D doesn't know anything about sportfishing boats, at all. He may know something about trawlers. He doesn't know anything about our kind of boats, in my experience.

I couldn't resist. He is a blow hard who costs people money that they do not need to spend.

I agree completely. He is a "project manager". The only project he seems to be managing is his own retirement.

There is "shaft log hose"? I did mine 20 years ago and searched all over for the correct hose. The hose that Hatt used on mine was a double wire steam rated hose. All the yards I called said at the time to use exhaust hose which was single wire and way thinner. I finally ended up having to buy a 10' piece from Amazon rubber and hose. That was pre inter web days and finding stuff like that was a nightmare.

In the past I used heavy wall exhaust hose without wire. The Buck hose is 6 ply and has much more reinforcement in it. That saidthe exhaust hose Hatteras used lasted 32 years.

I thought at the time "heavier might not be better" since it is the flexible connection between the log and the gland. It does need to resist twisting torque but the amount is only the friction created by the gland packing. In the end I went back with the heavy stuff.
