Hi All,

I live only a few minutes away from one of the largest and well respected yards in New England, Fairhaven Shipyard. They handle it all, hundreds and hundreds of steel fishing trawlers, power yachts of all sizes and materials ie fiberglass, aluminum, steel, wood.......A full service yard.

I often drive down just to see what they're up to as I did today. Of special note were two large sailing yachts, one 120', the other a 150' as well as an old whaling ship having her copper bottom attended to.

Attached are some photos. The first post is obviously the Whaling ship, the second post is the 120' (I thought the sliding keel extension was interesting) and the third post is the 150' (I thought the retractable thrusters and the open squares in the keel were interesting)

What would be the purpose of the keel cut-outs?

If they put glass in them you could stick your head down there and look at fish.

The thruster mystifies me. Blowboaters are usually obsessed with drag. Folding props, feathering props etc. Then they stick this tube out there sideways. Hmmm.

Either way, interesting pics. Thanks for posting them.

The thruster retracts. I have seen Hinkleys like that too.

Hi All,

They appear to retract and rotate (i say they because there's one in the bow as well)

How close is Salem to Boston? That would make it a Boston Whaler- the biggest one in the world. (sorry) That IS a huge ship. Draws twenty feet at least, wow.

Did they pick that old sailboat up with a TravelLift? Wow.

Hi All,

Jim, both fiberglass sailboats were built in 2000's, as I understand it.

And yes, amazingly the 120' is sitting there on a travelift.

The Whaler/wooden sailing ship I believe was brought out on a rail using a huge cradle.

I'm going to put that place on my travel list. I love shipyards. I remember spending a week at NorshipCo in Norfolk, VA, in the 80s, and they had a lathe which turned propeller shafts. It took up the entire side of a really huge building and it had a five-foot (sixty inches) drum. The scale of their tools and machinery was astonishing. I saw pistons from ocean freighters that were easily three feet in diameter with ring lands and inch square. Loved it. BIG tools.
