Thanks. I first saw that boat in 1984 when it was a year old . I wanted it and in 2002 I bought it.I've mentioned this before, but as a kid, I basically drew a picture of my 58. In short, I wanted that boat before I ever saw it. I guess that's why it spoke to me despite the fact it was in less than bristol condition when I bought it.

Used to think I wanted to be a naval architect when I was a kid, but when I got into college, I got bored drawing nuts and bolts. Maybe I should have stayed with, but that's water under the bridge. I'll try to remember to scan that drawing when I get home.

The Hatts on this thread are absolutely stunning and at the same time killing me for having bought a Mainship! I haven't even had my maiden voyage out of Rhode Island and already I am thinking I made a BIG mistake not buying Randy's 58TC and fixing it up!! Or digging deeper into my pockets and coming up with a beautiful 53 ED. Or completely blowing my mind and getting my absolute dream yacht - a 61 MY!! And they are all on this thread. Thanks for making my day totally miserable!!!

Whatever you do - take your time and make sure that whatever you buy you are madly in love with it. I thought I had adhered to my own advice and I took over 6 YEARS of looking and participating on various forums and I finally bought last December - and everyone tells me I got the buy of the century, that my boat is beautiful, and the appraisal came in at a value double what I paid. Having said all of that, I find myself here on HOF today dreaming of the 53ED and just now contacted an HOF member who is selling a 53ED (same fellow I contacted 3 years ago - maybe this time we will do a deal). My big fear is being a two-boat owner like Randy and others on this forum. Sort of like pets - once you get one, you just keep adding but never getting rid of what you had in inventory!!

Family outing to Statue of Liberty, we just came under Brooklyn Bridge when the Boat Pix helicopter came around and took a couple of shots. Nice having wide format color scanners at work. Thinking about getting a Cuckoo clock to go between the pictures of boat in basement (aka The Man Room) - seems appropriate.

I see very few sport fish models in the forum from up north, must be a good reason.Sure there is; there's no Tuna or Marlin in the Great Lakes. :)

Obviously it's a personal taste and use thing. Everybody gets the boat that suits their needs, wants and budget.

I would have a sportfisherman even if I didn't fish, but that's just because I like them. They're more like a sportscar in the boating world. Maybe that's why they're called converibles.

Personally I'm not a Motoryacht kind of guy. IMHO, they all look like they're sawed off in the back. Although I might be able to adjust to the look of a Yachtfish or CPMY. On the other hand since it's cold and a short season up north I could see why enclosed space has more value. But to me the look is like Classic Oceanliner vs. Cruise Box.

SportFishCruising
02-17-2010, 10:36 AM
I agree Scrod, like I said, your boat pic really turns me on! But, because I do live up north, there are no marlin and I want a live-aboard, I too am now leaning towards the YF & CPMY models. Thankfully, Hatteras has all models available. :)
(If I could afford to run a 52' sportfish, then that'd make a difference but I'm trying to stay under 50').

stormchaser
02-17-2010, 10:48 AM
If you run at a reasonable speed, I doubt there's much difference in fuel consumption between a 45'er and a 55'er...say 8.5-9.5 knots (hulls speed or lower). Take the 53MY as an example...keep her in displacement mode and you can get 1nmpg or better (about 10 knots for 10 gallons per hour at 1,100rpm, even better at lower speeds, say 8 knots)...but plane her off and that drops a LOT (15ish knots at 35 gallons per hour at approx 2,000rpm).

SportFishCruising
02-17-2010, 11:26 AM
I realize what you're saying Storm, but fuel consumption is not really the concern. Extra costs I worry about are the higher maintenance of a performance engine in a sportfish, and the extra costs for lenght when it comes to slip fees & shrinkwrapping for winter. It works out to $800 per foot per annum up here.

MicroKap
02-17-2010, 11:46 AM
Scrod,
If that's the SS United States, that's more than just an ocean liner. One of the founding members of our club bought the ship with several others a few years back. They were the group that had it towed to Turkey to have the asbestos removed and then towed back with its props lashed to the deck.

I think the current owner is NCL and there is a group that is looking to restore it to its past glory. I saw a special on it about 6 months ago. It was pretty impressive today (in its sad shape) and while it was commissioned. It still holds records for crossing the Atlantic and with 250,000 hp, it could go almost as fast in reverse as it does in forward.

Avenger
02-17-2010, 11:54 AM
It is indeed "The Big U". Even rusting at the dock she still looks like the greyhound that she was. Greatest Liner ever built by far.

It's sad to see the state she's in, but at least she hasn't been made into razor blades. Hopefully either NCL or someone with some serious capital and an appreciation of what she is can bring her back.

This wouldn't be a "proper" HOF thread if someone hadn't already high-jacked it away from it's intended photo theme. So I will almost get this back on track with a Chris Craft pic.

She's a 315 Commander 1985. It's not a "real" Commander so it's not very welcome in the Commander Club, and It's not a Hatteras, and obviously doesn't belong here, but what the heck.

This thread has already been previously defiled.... So here goes.

Every once in awhile someone will show up in the Great Lakes with a true sportfish, outriggers, tuna tower and all. I wonder if the can catch the little perch with that rig?? A friend of mine owns a mid 40'ish Chris Craft aft cabin. He pulled the Crusaders and installed 280hp. Yanmars. He takes the boat to and from Florida annually. He claims 2.7mpg. at 8 to 9 mph. The other interesting fact about Great Lakes boats is that almost all mid size, (under 45') boats have gas engines. The original buyers looked at their planned 50hr./year usage and opted to save the 80K extra cost of the diesels. They didn't realize that they also lost the torque. Our gas powered 36C gets 1mpg at 9mph. but any other speed shows .5mpg. So if we are going somewhere we either stay at 8 to 9, or go to full 18 to 19 mph cruise.:)

Trojan
03-02-2010, 09:53 AM
They use the out riggers for the Wallies, Lake Trout and Salmon. A little over kill, but they work better than the plainer boards. Ya don't use them on the perch.

The harbor photo was taken by my friend John Van Dyke, who is a painter; an oil painting done from the photo hangs in my house.

The running shot was taken by Bob Grieser, for an article on the restoration of my Hatteras in "Soundings", in the fall of 2005. The magazine sent him out to get photos of the boat and he spent an entire day in the blazing heat of August; well worth the effort as they turned out smashing. I've seen a lot of his work since then and it's always great.

jim rosenthal
03-02-2010, 11:55 PM
I've lived aboard in MD, but never through a winter like this one. I don't think I could have. For many of my liveaboard winters here, in Baltimore and Kent Island, I was on a Striker, which is made out of aluminum. Talk about cold and damp? it was like being in a refrigerator.

The Hatteras 36 was not as big, but a much better liveaboard- almost as much living space, and a lot warmer. It would have been difficult to be LESS warm.

We are supposed to get warmer weather within a week or so. I hope so. We could all use a break around here. It's been a terrible winter.

Great shots, Blaine. Where else did you go on your Lake MI trip?

We started in Chicago. Spent a couple of days with our daughter there. When we left Burnham Harbor, the forcast was for 1-3s. As soon as we cleared the break wall, we were greeted with 5&6 footers. We were taking spray off of the pulpit and over the bimini.

We crossed over to St. Joseph, then up to South Haven. Were were planning on making it up to Saugatuk, but the weather wasn't cooperating.

We went back down to New Buffalo then Michigan City, then back down the river. Great trip. I think this was the same week you were up north and had some weather as well.

Interesting to see the difference between my boat, which is a 71, and Blaine's, which is a 75. They moved the ladder to the other (better!) side; wish I had that. What engines do you have, Blaine? Your boat looks beautiful. I don't think Hatteras ever built a prettier boat than the Series I 36C. I am biased, of course.

I've mentioned this before, but as a kid, I basically drew a picture of my 58.

Finally remembered to scan the drawing I mentioned earlier. It was done in pencil some 37 years ago (at age 15), so it didn't scan that well. Maybe there's a way to darken it up, but if so, I don't know how.

Randy,

Nice artwork! Shearline looks a little straight but it definitely looks like a motoryacht. As far as the scanner, try setting it for grayscale. I find that works better for pencil drawings. But they still don't come out as nice as the originals.

Dr. Jim,

Could you elaborate a bit on your view of the ladder placement? Mine is on the port side like yours and I don't find it an issue. Is it too close to the door in your view? I would think that if you have a lower helm the stbd ladder would slightly obstruct the view from the only back window. On my boat there's a tackle-center on the stbd side. Swapping the ladder over there would mean a much smaller area for the tackle-center on the port side.

Randy,

Nice artwork! Shearline looks a little straight but it definitely looks like a motoryacht. As far as the scanner, try setting it for grayscale. I find that works better for pencil drawings. But they still don't come out as nice as the originals.

Thanks Derek, I'll try a different setting on the scanner. Yeah, it's hard NOT to have a straight shearline when you're using nothing more than a pencil and ruler. My mom had saved some of my drawings and gave them to my wife a few years ago.

Thanks Jim. It could still use a little cosmetic work on the outside. We have 260HP 3208s. They are great. Of course I am biased as I spent 31 years with Cat, a good portion of that in the Marine group.

Here's a link to my website for the boat. After the Lake Michigan trip we decided we would like something a little bigger before doing the loop. Still a couple of years off though.

I was on another 36C years ago which was a later boat than mine, and had the ladder on the starboard side; I remember going up the ladder and thinking "this is a better place for it than what I have on my boat".

I don't fish very often, and I don't have a tackle center on Blue Note, so I don't need the space under the window to be that accessible. I do have a built in deck box there, but that could as easily have gone under a ladder if it was on that side; it wouldn't be any less usable. It's hard to explain; it may have to do with being right-handed, as foolish as that sounds.

I agree that having the ladder on the right might block the view out of the window a bit. But I very seldom drive the boat from the downstairs helm; virtually always from the bridge. And I don't dock it from down below, I always use the bridge helm for that. Now (again) if I was fishing, I'd want to use the lower helm, I'd want to be able to see through the window to the deck, and so on.

It's a small detail. Over twenty years of owning Blue Note, or something like that, I have gotten used to her idiosyncrasies and peculiarities, some of which I am sure I put there myself. But Hatteras built a lot of 36Cs between 1969 and 1977 and it's interesting to me to see how the design evolved over time. The two big differences that I wish I had are the larger tanks, and the fiberglass exhaust pipes. Although I don't typically run long distances, the extra tank space would be nice; I notice that on the 36Cs that Slane does over, they all get a larger midships crossways tank which holds more and trims better. And the fiberglass pipes make things a lot easier to maintain and less likely to leak.

The thing that I really should change on my boat is the wooden aft bulkhead, a weak point on these older boats, and something that sooner or later, I am going to have to address.

Thanks. I guess it's a personal preference thing. Little things like that make it preferable for me to have it on the port side. i.e. Since I dock port side to, the ladder on the port side is also convenient for boarding.

I would love to have Slane's tank in mine. Somebody added an extra tank to mine bringing the fuel capacity to almost 400 gal. Which provides a nice extra margin for those canyon trips. However the plumbing is a horror since they didn't put returns on it so you have to play games with which tanks you draw from and return to. Having just one tank with fills on both sides of the boat and no valve issues would sure be nice.

Thanks for all the photos guys, it's wonderful to see your HATTS in the water and especially nice to see your well kept boats in action. It provides an opportunity to study these models alot further than just looking at listings on YW, etc.
It would also be interesting and a learning experience to view these yachts on the hard, in the yard, to fully appreciate its hull designs and working gear so I started another thread entitled "Hard Hatts", if owners would be so kind as to post there as well it would be appreciated by anyone doing some research.

Not a Hatt, but a design from another Great Naval Architect- Tom Fexas.

Pictured here is my Cheoy Lee 58 Motor Yacht 1989- with DD8V92TI's anchored in the Grenadines ( Sandy Island, just off Carriacou Is., Grenada)
She's similar in design to the Hatteras 58MY in layout, but has that signature Fexas look.

This site has been an amazing resource! I don't think any other manufactuer has such a great resource nor are their vessels as well documented as Hatteras.

Proud owner of a new (to us - 1985) 85' (!!) extended 72'MY wide cabin. Purchased in Newport Beach in December of 2009, drove her down to San Diego for a haul-out and some minor refurb, then brought her up to the Bay Area last month. 12V71TI's, Naiad Stabilizers, Water Maker, twin 25kw gensets, main deck Jacuzzi. Steam room, office and fitness center were the add-ons (took out the aft two VIP staterooms). Also stripped all the white paint out of the master stateroom and veneered with cherry leaving teak highlights. And NO, we could never afford an 85' Hat in the "real world," but this was a bank owned boat that was way too cheap (inexpensive?) to pass up. We're on cloud 9, and very, very blessed.

I've seen a couple too. But I think they were repaints that they never put the riggers back on or ones that lost them in the hurricanes. A new set of triple spreaders will set you back $10k today so you could see y someone selling the boat might take a set of bent ones off and not replace them. I sold my old set after the hurricanes and replaced them with 41' triple spreader Lee's big rigs. They are double wall super heavy designed for the 30+ knot boats. I wanted them because we fish tag lines with heavier baits in the Bahamas and the lighter riggers get too much wip to them when u pull the baits up sea. My father knew Mr Lee back in the 60's I cant believe Lee's moved out of miami after 50+ years. Their up in NC now.

Geez that's a lot of money for outrigger parts! Especially since they're mostly just aluminum tube.

We couldn't get parts for our old Rybovitch outriggers. But we saved a bunch by buying arms from Lee's and making new hubs. Just break out your trusty Bridegport and some 4" round stock:

http://i51.tinypic.com/35jcgvm.jpg

It took some research to figure out that the originals with the cast spreaders were Rybovitch. Of course, no parts are available anymore. New vs. Old:

Very nice work! I don't have the shop, tools or skills to do such impressive work. The one I was referring to only had the brackets left. The poles snapped during an ice storm and everything was damaged. Needed 45' poles, triple spreaders and rigging. I agree, way too much money for what they are.

Capndan, the weatherboards forward on the rail look interesting. can you post other pictures showing a full view of the bow/weatherboards? Looks great!!

Mario
The weatherboards were put on by the PO as a safety measure for their small children and pet. They also do a good job keeping the spray off the boat.

Hi All,

Dan, Mario....I like the look as well......

Dan, any impact on field of view.....?

Capndan

With the enclosed flybridge with A/C and heat all driving is done from there so in this application no. There is minor view obstruction with anything close to the bow from the lower helm. The biggest issue for galley down boats would be the blocked view from that area. We have a office and state room instead of the galley there so its not a negative for us. It does hide deck boxes and fenders which cleans the exterior view up. They make the boat look bigger and they flow very well into the aft area. The biggest plus is the increased safety for small children and pets.

Dan, I think it looks great!! gives it an impressive "ship" look. Love it! I wonder what my YF would look like with weatherboards up front? Hmm

Great shot Bill! Where do you keep her? I've only seen 2 31's before, one express one with the bridge, both were at Brown's Boat Yard in Sayreville, NJ. That was about 25 years ago when I dreamed of someday owning a Hatteras.

The white marlin fishing off southern NJ and Virginia and MD for about the last 6 years has been unreal. the august to September bite has been very good to Epic. My best is 13 releases, but others who are pro's have had as many as 52. The offshore fishing during those times is as good as any destination spot in the world. I think the use of circle hooks, better satalitte technology, faster boats, and updated techniques all play into why we are seeing terrific results.

If you get one with GPS, attitude hold etc etc. Very easy. I can let go of my controller and the quad stays in position. With lil movement do to retaining GPS and wind. No need to pay a company for aerial photos anymore.
